Shower floor: poor epoxy grout job?
Comments (12)for those interested. The Mapei rep comments were: "The product is mixed in the pail and can not shade if mixed properly. The grout joints appear to be very deep in some areas while somewhat flush in others. This is an installation issue and not a result of product performance." and "The outcome one sees in the photos is not typical of the Opticolor grout. Applying Opticolor results in color consistent grout with flush grout joints. The grout issue you have is an installation issue and not a product issue.".. No suggestions for remediation, but he gave me names of three installers. I hope they will be willing to come and finish the job.....See MorePoor Grout Job?
Comments (9)There are several issues with the grout, and with the mortaring of the tile as well. When they mortared the tile they did not space them properly, and they didn't lay them flat. Look at the linear marble tiles in the bottom image, second row left, second tile in is lower than the rest. This happens throughout. As for the grout, again, forget for a second about the pebble-y pieces...look at the linear marble. The grout has shrunk so deep between the tiles that either it was mixed badly (too much water) or applied badly, or both. The pebble-y pieces are awful. Depending on what these looked like before installation, they should have only been grouted around the perimeter (which means the surface of those pieces should have been sealed or protected before grouting) or possibly they should have been covered with grout then washed and scraped more thoroughly of grout afterward. It's a terrible job any way you slice it. As for how you educate your contractor, honestly, I don't think you can. No one looking at that tile, who has any experience or integrity, would try to convince you that that was done properly. He's either a hack or a crook, and I don't know how you deal with either. It's a problem I keep encountering....See MoreNeed opinions on (bad?) tile job
Comments (29)Metricpony. If the current sub can't fix the work they installed, I would consider someone else to do it right. I would imagine the builder will object to getting a new installer, but the bottom line is, you have to be happy with the finished product. I understand what Weedyacres said about putting waterproof membrane over green board and it being suitable, but I don't believe it's something that's going to last for years. There is no reason to rip out rows of tile, just to install a listello to make the job right. It should have been set up right to start with. This is just an installer that doesn't care how it ends up. Any professional would have done a lay out to make sure it falls with a full piece or a nice sized cut. Personally, if it were my house. It would all be removed and start over using cement board and an installer that cares about the work they do and the finished product....See MorePoor drywall/paint job
Comments (8)I got an email back from builder today saying he is coming back to do more work, so to not 'jump the gun'. Some of the above though I don't think are due to 'jumping the gun' ....Funnily enough when we met the painting guy on the first day of his job here he was saying he didn't need to plastic the windows....I checked out the main floor and amongst the haze, was a haze of overspray setting on my brand new windows....and the next day window plastic magically appeared.... :P We are using eggshell paint. The texture and overspray are what is bugging me the most....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
