Avocado, Don Gillogly, fruit drop small seed
Comments (11)My Don Gillogly tree is about five years old now and about 20 feet tall (so much for being a dwarf house plant..ha)Last year was the first year it had fruit. Had about 5 avocados. They were ok. This year we had about 5 like the ones you pictured and a bumper crop of about 35 regular avocados, except so far, every one we've cut open has be stringy. YUCK. I'm hoping that it's because it's a young tree and the fruit will get better. If not, I swear I'll cut the tree down and plant a Holiday. Anyway, to answer your question, this tree is not supposed to need another to produce fruit. I only have the one tree. However, keep in mind that this tree is also supposed to be a dwarf (which is why I bought it), and produce twice a year (which I certainly haven't seen)...See MoreHas anyone grown a Chamapaigne Cocktail grapefruit tree?
Comments (7)Softmentor, I wanted to add something to my previous response. You are partially right. There is something called cocktail citrus and yes it does have more then one fruit on the same tree, sometimes 3-4. I wish I could have found one of these before I bought my tree. They are a great option for someone who lives in a temperate climate and has to grow indoors at least part of the year but the name is cocktail citrus. It does not contain champagne or grapefruit in the name, that is what seperates the two from another. I just wanted to clear that up in case someone here sees that and buys what I got and ends up being upset because what they ended up with was just one variety of fruit. I am very torn right now. I really want one more citrus and I am having such a hard time trying to decide between the IM lemon and the washington navel orange which is my all time favorite. Ahh..decisions descisions. i eny the gropu of people here who live in zone 8 and higher and can grow whatever they want! I recieved a Logees catalog in the mail yesterday. The only thing that I really like about the catalog is the pictures. Well at least until I got this catalog yesterday! On the cover of the new catalog is a photo of a 'Day' avocado. I almost bought an avocado the last time I was in Florida. I remember the Home Depot selling them for $9.00! I almost picked it up but i was determined to buy a grafted condo mango and there was no stopping me! I remember seeing the cocktail citrus and all the other citrus trees they had for sale. It made me want to cry when I saw the price tag. I am now considering renting a van and loading up while i am there. When I checked out the price tags, it made me sick! They had huge citrus trees for under $50.00! You Florida peopole are so lucky, and even though it is not legal to buy citrus and take them out of Florida, I really doubt that anyone would have noticed or said anything. The security people at tampa airport didn't say much when they saw me carrying on a large box with my mango inside! Andrew...See MoreUgli Fruit vs 'Cocktail' Grapefruit
Comments (6)I've tasted both (from a supermarket, so I'm not really sure either were at their best). The Ugli fruit was kind of like an orange-flavored grapefruit. The flavor was a little watery. The oils in the rind are very "heavy" and spicy (also "intense" and "bitter"). Not really sure it's in a good way that makes you want to eat it, but it does add a distinctive character to the aroma of eating the fruit. Now you can draw a parallel between the taste of Ugli fruit and a Cocktail grapefruit. They could both be described is laying somewhere in between the spectrum of grapefruit and orange. Cocktail grapefruit is much sweeter though and I would say the orange-aspect is a bit more mandarin-like. Neither really has the full grapefruit flavor or a fragrance of a regular grapefruit. (I'd say the Ugli fruit wasn't like a grapefruit at all, in terms of flavor). The Ugli fruit didn't have a huge amount of flavor. (I think it's mostly those spicy fragrances in the peel that draw people to eat it). Insepid might not be the right word, but like a very mild flavored orange....See MoreChampaigne Cocktail grapefruit tree
Comments (17)Hello everyone, Today I had to go to Buffalo and get my staples out from my back surgery. Boy am I happy those suckers are out! Now my abdomen can heal. Anyways stopped at a Wegmans and went to check out there produce. They had HUGE pummelos but they were $3.99 each! I was not paying that much but guess what was right next to them! Cocktail grapefruits! I could tell they were a lil pass there prime so I grabbed the 3 that looked the best. I couldn't wait to get home so I peeled it in the car and ate it. My first thought was that is was very sweet and juicy but it did have a fair amount of seeds. I didn't complain. The flesh was light orange and it did have a faint bitterness to it. I wonder if the bitterness comes with the fruit being past its prime. No matter to me, it is a definate keeper. I have a new favorite grapefruit!! I will say that the fruits are smaller then grapefruit at least the ones I bought. I would say they were the size of a medium navel. I will take a picture of the one fruit I have left. I am happy that I decided to go with this fruit tree instead! Andrew...See More- 8 years ago
