Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

Love encaustic tile hallway, what kitchen tile matches?

I want to tile my front entry with Victorian-style encaustic tile like the pictures below. One archway leads from the entry to my living room, which will have a hardwood floor. The other leads to the kitchen. How can I choose a kitchen tile and entry tile that will complement each other? I want the kitchen tile to be larger-format, plainer, and cheaper.

well, what you're showing are combinations of mosaics, so the expense of putting them together is nontrivial (not sure they're encaustic, but they are lovingly done). however, there are now some regular tiles out there that have encaustic-like look.
I think this one is available from Home Depot, and there are larger and smaller patterns, but it's cost-friendly enough for a whole kitchen.

I'd probably run hardwood into the kitchen just so avoid having three different floorings which can look choppy

Hi everybody, I’m a tile installer. Even though this thread is a little old I thought I’d chime in. I have 12 years installing tile. I was just contracted to install an encaustic cement tile. I had not worked with this tile previously and was Not informed of the 2 page pdf of handling instructions. I was already halfway done with my floor when I found out that I had done everything wrong. Luckily my installation was very clean but I still had to sand off effervescence which is lime leaching from the tile surface. after sanding dusting then scrubbing with special cleanser then rinsing with water again I still am not happy with the result. But they are much better. While doing all this extra work that I can’t charge for I noticed hairline fractures in all the tiles. what could I have done so wrong that the tiles have fractured? I won’t name the company here out of professional courtesy but I am beyond upset that a product such as this could be sold for $50 sqft. It should be pre-sealed and the warnings should be on the box at least. I’m asking the company to refund my clients but I am still out 4000 in labor. it may be the last job I take under my company before joining the tile union again. I will never recommend cement tiles for installation in any application.

Sadly, we can't keep it now. For one thing, I found out the cost of matching the tile to the area which does not have it, would be approximately $2000. I never expected that, had no idea new encaustic tile was that much money let alone that wasn't even the price to exactly match it, just for some other encaustic tile in general - I never even got around to asking how much it would be for a special order. Once I found out the price of their stock line, that was that. Aside from that anyway, when demolition began it really dinged up the edges of the existing tile rather badly. I had to take a hard look at the situation and when my BF even admitted that he felt it might be the wrong move to try and salvage it (he, I think, was more in love with it than I) I finally admitted defeat. I am now on a quest to try and figure out the best material to float over the floor. I've been told that laying regular ceramic over is the easiest method but I really would prefer a wood floor to match the rest of the house. So - not sure yet what's going to happen. Bummer for sure.

cpartist, they were approved for sure, and I don't know their rating..but being an extremely clumsy person that I am, I asked to put some water on it, and tried to walk on them barefoot(wiping them nicely afterwards of course:) right in the store.. To me, they were very slippery. I liked them to the point I ordered some product off Amazon that makes surfaces a bit less slippery..the product did help, but muted the color.. In flooring department, almost nothing worked for me personally-we ended up special ordering the tile where we could control texture.. But more modern and textured/ wood-like porcelain usually has the best traction. It just did not go with the new house, at all. I must add that most of the people out there have no problem with most of the flooring I wouldn't even consider. It's individual. I always try to walk on a sample first..

Thanks for your comments. acm, I feel like the mosaics I want for the entry space are too busy for the kitchen, which is quite large. I also want to be able to splurge on something really special in the entry and for the kitchen just do a big cheap field tile, since I've seen a bunch that I liked.

Sina, if I can't find any way to coordinate I'll probably do hardwood in the entry and plain tile in the kitchen. The layout is not open-plan, though, you can see from one room to another only through a doorway, and you can't see all three areas at once. I'm also very concerned about dirt since I have kids and bad weather. In a previous apartment we had a hardwood foyer and you could easily see the dirt embedded in the grain where people walked frequently (and yes, I washed it regularly!) I would never do hardwood in the kitchen, that is one trend I just do not understand even though it looks beautiful.
