Anyone recognise this orchid? Is it possibly an Oncidium hybrid? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this ID question a while back. This weekend I found something interesting. I wonder if anyone has any comments. From what I have read, this species seems to be native to Asia......Trini commented that it has naturalized to Florida. I was unbagging some old, I believe cypress mulch.....standard Home Depot issue. The bags had laid untouched for probably six month or maybe longer. Termites had actually nested in them and broken down the wood chips condsierably. Of interest, also inside the closed bag were about twenty bulbs growing in various stages of size. None in bloom as of yet, but I am assuming that this is the same species that I had posted about earlier in this thread. Of note is the fact that the place where I rescued the initial bulbs from, was also an area that was heavily mulched with what looked like cypress mulch. This makes me wonder. Does the cypress mulch come from somewhere where this species is prevalent? I assumed that cypress mulch was made here in the SE US. I am perplexed as to how the mulch, which is bagged and therefore shielded to a great extent from the outside could have been inoculated with the seeds of this orchid species. Anyone have any theories?? Harry

Hi Boco Joe, There are more than 20,000 registered Phalaenopsis Hybrids and then there is the variation within a crossing because each seed will be slightly different. Lovely colour and there is variation where that white area appears on the flower. Sometimes you can be lucky if your orchid is a widely distributed mericlone (copy).

Thanks Darlene, I missed your comment the first time around... Funny you should mention that shaved...for many years I always thought growing Orchids was very difficult...mostly due to the fact that the few I was given throughout the (many) years I always manage to kill...and never had I ever had any orchid live long enough to re-bloom,lol...until this time around. NeedIess to say its very exciting for me! Thank you for the links Arthurm...I will check them out. Here's a Cattleya (pretty sure) by some memebers here ID for me... bloomed a few weeks ago and still has a couple blooms left today... This was taken a few weeks back...

arthurm I did suspect that this might be a species, rather than a hybrid, as it was growing in the grounds of one of the Temples associated with the Co Loa Citadel complex. Looking up your ID, I believe you are not far off the mark, if not bang on the nail. Thank you. Fof

Oncidium. yes. But what else is the question. Universe is too large to guess. A long shot is you see it on the internet or a magazine and get the name. Someone here may have the answer. All long shots. Nice flower regardless. Is it fragrant?

I had a dendrobium no id. It is a species and I saw it online several years after I got it. It can happen but more go unknown than not.

Rachel, there is a little problem with Golden Red Star. Sure, it is there at the University of Google but it is not in the place that matters, that is the orchid register at Kew.

There is a problem that occurs at most orchid societies around the world and even here on this forum. That is Orchid Naming stuff is Rocket Science!

Oncostele Wildcat 'Bloodshot' is a many times mericloned orchid and sometimes in the mericloning process things go wrong or in this case things go wrong in a good way. So, a few years this entry appeared on the listing of the Nursery where I buy Orchid Society Raffle plants. Oncostele Wildcat 'Bloodshot' (Mutation) I'm not sure if this is the correct way to write the name or not but it is better than a made up name.
