Orchid ID please
Comments (11)I posted this ID question a while back. This weekend I found something interesting. I wonder if anyone has any comments. From what I have read, this species seems to be native to Asia......Trini commented that it has naturalized to Florida. I was unbagging some old, I believe cypress mulch.....standard Home Depot issue. The bags had laid untouched for probably six month or maybe longer. Termites had actually nested in them and broken down the wood chips condsierably. Of interest, also inside the closed bag were about twenty bulbs growing in various stages of size. None in bloom as of yet, but I am assuming that this is the same species that I had posted about earlier in this thread. Of note is the fact that the place where I rescued the initial bulbs from, was also an area that was heavily mulched with what looked like cypress mulch. This makes me wonder. Does the cypress mulch come from somewhere where this species is prevalent? I assumed that cypress mulch was made here in the SE US. I am perplexed as to how the mulch, which is bagged and therefore shielded to a great extent from the outside could have been inoculated with the seeds of this orchid species. Anyone have any theories?? Harry...See MoreOrchid ID please
Comments (7)Yes definitely a Phrag, could even be the type species, besseae. I don't want to scare you but this genus is not easy. They are found terrestrially, nearly always growing by running water, so their culture is completely different from their close relatives the Paphipedilums (slipper orchids), which like much drier, often alkaline, conditions. Keep them always moist, preferably using rainwater and make sure the water around the roots is never stagnant. I don't grow them on account of their difficulty but a friend at our local OS who does says, if grown in pots you must wash the pot through thoroughly every time you water, which he does twice a week. He uses pure sphagnum, no bark or any other compost that will decay easily and never lets them get cold. Good luck - Ian....See Moreorchid id please
Comments (1)Hi Boco Joe, There are more than 20,000 registered Phalaenopsis Hybrids and then there is the variation within a crossing because each seed will be slightly different. Lovely colour and there is variation where that white area appears on the flower. Sometimes you can be lucky if your orchid is a widely distributed mericlone (copy)....See MoreOrchid ID please
Comments (1)Hard to say on plant form. Bulbophyllum rothschildianum has that annoying growth habit with the " long stem" between pseudobulbs....See Moreshavedmonkey (Harvey in South Fl.)Z10b
