Opinions please - tile or granite backsplash?
Comments (5)Thanks! I just met with our granite installer this afternoon, and he very gently nudged me toward tile. He pointed out that we have a couple of feet of backsplash with no cabinets above, and it will look very thick and heavy where it meets with the painted wall. Also, would have to reposition some undercabinet light fixtures. The current tile is very thin ceramic so we'd lose an inch of counter top by adding granite and I think it might even affect the space we have for the faucet behind the sink. I've convinced DH that we'll go with tile. Now, to pick the tile!! So many decisions!! I don't have any pics yet, still trying to decide on our granite color, and we seem to change our minds almost daily....See MoreYet another request for backsplash opinion
Comments (27)Oh palimpset and redroze -- I believe we have some kitchen ESP happening. I was just on Daltile's site in the early evening looking at their subs, wondering if I could interest DH in another color, actually looking at the bisque and then the gray. They have some 4 x 8's available (can't remember the color anymore, since it's been a whole 2 hours ago) And Redroze, I've had your 2 x 8's on my mind, and showed my husband your kitchen on Saturday. He isn't a fan of 3 x 6's, and is attracted to the unique sizes and like yours . . . And I think you hit it on about the "non 3 x 6" size being a focal point itself. I have tomorrow off. I will be running around trying to find some varied color, non 3 x 6 subs. Wish me luck in this wee Southern town. I cannot tell you how much I greatly appreciate this input. My husband is OOT this week, luckily he's used to coming home to changed game plans about the kitchen details. He's learned that the ideas I have been offered here are fabulous!...See MoreOpinions on using flooring tiles as backsplash?
Comments (12)All, thanks a lot for your honest feedback (please keep them coming!) Raehelen - This has been also a dilemma for me: the overhang question with the 24" tiles. I have researched this quite a bit. Maybe should post this on a separate thread but for now here is a run down: There are few options: 1) Going for ultra modern look and stop at the cabinet depth (this should be OK only if the total depth of the cabinets stops at 24" - Otherwise would look weird with doors and drawer faces protruding beyond the counter edge). 2) Finishing the edge with a trim piece: Either similar to the material of your cabinetry to give it some consistency or use a metal edging (there is a cool company names schluter-systems (www.schluter.com) that offers such solutions especially designed for tiled counters) 3) Running a small strip of the tile in the back  Can be the tile itself, OR a completely different tile, likely the same as the backsplash. Thinking in the line of 1" mosaics that continues onto the backsplash. Can do lots of things here just requires a bit of creativity. Bellacat_2008 - The tile is called Steelwork, color Argento (it comes also in a bronze/copperish and a darker/black tone). The manufacturing company was difficult to figure out  as most suppliers wonÂt tell you their sources. But it is called "Fioranese" I think. Bellow is a link to a website that has some pictures of it in different settings: Here is a link that might be useful: tile pics...See MoreHorizontal or vertical tiles on backsplash? Grout color choice?
Comments (32)"Now you know why I am terrified to make a decision here. But I am not feeling the Quartz at all." There is a wealth of granite choices, Blue Dunes is not your only option... If you want something "safe" color-wise that you pretty much can't screw up, look at soapstone. Or, if you research soapstone and decide it's not a good stone choice for you, consider honed Virginia Mist (Jet Mist) or leathered Steel Grey granites. Or some other stone with a much lower degree of color variability. ETA: Honed Jet Mist: Leathered Steel Grey: (this person's kitchen is beautiful!!)...See Moredazureus
