thorny invasive tree-like thing taking over HELP!
Comments (6)When I first saw this thread, I thought you had what I have EVERYWHERE - but mine is not tree-like. More like a vine that roots itself. I always thought it was some kind of wild raspberry (never saw fruit, but the vines look like it). I never looked it up. I just keep trying to eradicate it in my yard. Maybe you and I have the same thing. This stuff is nasty. It gets caught on your legs, and if you pull it without realizing what it is, it sure does hurt. If my daughter ever remembers to bring home the camera I will post a photo. :) Dee...See MoreDo strong winds help strengthen a tree's root system?
Comments (31)It has been shown that norway spruces regularly exposed to strong winds develop a different cross-section of their major roots. The roots on unstressed trees have oval/circular cross-section while those of stressed trees have a T-shaped cross-section that improves their resistance to wind-throw. Biological systems (and most complex systems, also inanimate ones) develop in different ways in response to consistent stresses. Just as a plant develops a deeper root systems in response to droughts, or grows taller to reach canopy, I don't see what is so unbelievable in imagining how a plant will direct its resources to improve its structure, when repeatedly stressed by wind. What Tom mentioned is, I believe, also responsible for the phenomenon of the Fir Waves... Now, coming to the topic of the conversation, I believe these adaptations will take time to set in, and I think staking would make sense in that light. Also, staking means everything and nothing. I can stake a tree so that its trunk will not move by one inch. Or I can stake widely enough just so it won't topple. These two ways of staking must have completely different effects on how the plant will adapt to wind....See Moresprouting roots taking over garden
Comments (4)Maybe, just as a precaution, check your bylaws and know your rights. If say your neighbor's branches are encrouching over your fence, usually in many municipalities, you have the right to trim off that overhang. However in the case of roots and cutting off say major roots - that's another story. If hte tree gets damaged or killed off in the process, you could get fined for that. On the otherhand, perhaps the by-laws will force the neighbor to do something about this. IMHO homeowners should take steps to ensure trees don't encrouch on other people's property be it an overhanging branch or encrouching roots....See MoreTaking A Bare Rooted Tree And Potting Into Gritty Mix
Comments (28)Hi Kassieb, Wow.. Haven't seen this thread for a long time!! Congratulations on your treasures that you picked up in Hawaii! I am Sure you had a wonderful time. Just love the islands.... I would always put slits In the bottom of your container that you root in.. I like the clear solo cups or cups from Starbucks.. I used to use bottles.. But I like clear cups better.. ( a friend started me when he sent a cutting rooted in a red solo cup). ;-). I take a pair of scissors and make four slits on the bottom edge of the cup.. Water once and then let them sit on heat and let them work their magic.. It can take up to 8 weeks or so to root, so make sure you are patient when rooting. Have fun!!! Hi Ed!! Those were some beautiful cuttings.. Many thanks to friends!!! BBB is Brads Buds and Blooms.. They are In Florida Laura...See Moretropicbreezent
