Christmas Cactus Arms Falling Off - help!
Comments (12)Howdy! The loss of whole limbs, on an otherwise healthy seeming plant, can often indicate bound roots. As to your other questions: No, they don't need to be root-bound. That's a Myth. ;) Bad potting soil is the real reason that most people say to use small containers. However, if you use a fast-draining bark-based mix, you can grow in containers that are much larger than traditionally advised. I'm obviously a big fan of bark-based mixes. I have Christmas Cactus growing in pure bark, and I also have some growing in bark with a few other ingredients. I start with Fir bark (sold as fine-grade Orchid Bark), and I add Perlite, Pumice, and a small amount of African Violet or Cacti & Succulent Soil to help bind the mix and retain moisture. In humid environments, I would forego the addition of the AV or C&S potting soil...and I would simply water a little more often. In situ, these jungle cacti (attached to bark and debris in the crooks of trees) might receive rain-water several times a day; but the water never pools or sits too long around the roots. Comments (6)palmbob - Due to the semi-arid nature of Lubbock, the soil dries out fairly quickly normally, but if it rains, then it stays humid for a day or two and the soil will not dry out at all. It only ever rains in my house if I do not close the windows quickly enough, but I have a balcony which my plants sit out on when weather permits. I let them ride out little rain events when possible too which also is why I wait longer to water sometimes. I hope it is just normal and that I will have a new plant soon! hoovb - I do not have a cat, both happened inside when there was no one in the house. Supposedly... but seriously I live with my girlfriend and two dogs, and both times we all were out of the house and they were safely inside behind closed windows. joediedrichs - I hate to break it to you, but that blue is paint and it is probably not too good for your little opuntia. I got mine from Walmart too and that actually worries me further knowing their lackadaisical care. I fear it may be rot due to miss-care for the little one, but the big bunny ears' pads all seem to be healthy and holding on well. The only plus side is that the pad should propagate, so I do plan to see if it does grow into a healthy plant!...See MoreBunny Ear Cactus Help
Comments (3)For Opuntias the more sun the merrier. The brown spots could also be a soil issue. It would be best if you could go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a bag of perlite. It's cheap:). Do a mix of 50% C&S soil with 50% perlite. This will help with drainage. MG cactus soil has a lot of peat in it which isn't the best for succulents. Peat can retain water or once dried out become hydrophobic. The water just runs off like Scotchguard;). When giving your little friend more sun do it slowly because it could burn. Even the hardiest cacti can burn if not use to the sun. Last thing make sure the pot has drainage holes. Goodluck:)....See MoreBunny ears cactus
Comments (2)Like when you walk out of a dark room and into the sunny patio...takes time to adjust. If its a hot sunny window- keep watering the plant and it will adjust faster. Only move away in winter to keep it from freezing. Or,keep under lights....See Morelove_cookies_4ever
