a place to buy Al's Gritty Mix online?
Comments (9)Yes...I have lost my mind! I went to my local Agway (2 miles down the road, no less)and found all 3 ingredients. They had everything but the 1/8 screen, but I figures I could lay 2 sheets of the 1/4 inch, tack it down offset to create 1/8 and put a few wire ties in the middle to hold it together. I didn't think they would have all parts, as I'm in the burbs, where there isn't much call for Chicken/Turkey Grit. I couldn't help but to let out a "MUUU-HA-HA-Ha" as I paid for my purchase! Also, I came up with a idea for a motorized shaker. I'm going to build 3 screens (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and bug screen) OK that's actually 4, so I can't count, sue me! Anyhoo, after building same, I'm going to put those little hookey-loopey things that you use to hold screen doors to hook them together. Drill a hole slightly larger than a 10 penny nail, but not big enough for the head to slip through. Put nail through the middle one, and hook it to my drill. The fact that the nail will not be perfectly straight (if it it, bend it slightly) will make the whole shoothig match bobble up and down, and shake it through the screen (thus replacing beer powered shaker previously required. If it works, I'll draw up some plans and post them. If not I will sheepishly report my failure, then commit Hari-Kari. If you never hear from me again, assume the thing flew apart, and I perished from a flying nail through the noggin. Ta-ta for now, Spaceman...See MoreBest place to buy potting soil online?
Comments (2)Blondell, have you tried Ebay? Honestly, shipping prices for soil is going to be expensive no matter where you shop. Most Ebay sellers combine shipping..so let's say shipping one bag is 10.00, 'usually,' each additional bag is half-price or a certain percentage. In most cases, mediums are reasonably priced, 'especially if not available locally,' but S&H is where they get you. Regarding coupons. Google name of a nursery, then type, codes and coupons, or promotional deals, and/or free shipping. If you're lucky, you'll find updated coupons. Good luck, Toni...See MoreMiracle Orchid Pot Mix or Barks?
Comments (3)Just got your first orchid and the first thing you are going to do is repot it. Why? How does it look at the moment? As for the Miracle Orchid Mix, i am very suspicious of anything with the word "miracle" on the label. Your growing conditions are much more important than the mix and if the plant is healthy you can have 12 months of grace before you have to repot. As for how often to water? describe the position where you intend to grow the orchid and one of the local growers should be able to give good advice....See MoreFafard Pro Potting Mix or Organic Potting Mix
Comments (9)I've used many different kinds of potting mixes and will NEVER use anything but Fafard again, though NOT the product on the retail shelves. Their (so called)professional mix is much like the rest of the stuff....barely so-so. But Fafard makes a line of mixes for growers and that's what I use. You may have to have your retailer special order it, but it will be totally worth it for container growing. I used these mediums back when I was a grower of nursery crops and that's how I became introduced to Fafard. My salesman was smart...I had been using ProMix and MetroMix....he left me 5 or 6 bags "to try" and I've never looked back, lol. That was over 20 years ago. I've attached a link so that you can look at the packaging and read the ingredients. I always go for the heavy weight mixes. I buy the Nursery Mix most of the time but keep some of the #3 on hand, too. You'll probably need to visit a locally owned garden center or nursery for a special order. If you're lucky, the nursery, if they do any growing at all, might even have some in stock that they will be willing to sell you. I have a large bail of ProMix in my garage that someone gave me years ago, and I haven't touched it. I'll use it in the gardens one of these days, but never in a container.
