Help with Kitchen Appliance Layout

Hello!

I'd love some help with my kitchen appliance and sink layout. I will post pictures of my floor plan at the bottom of this link.

Appliances needed:

1. counter depth "standard" size fridge

2. 36" gas range top

2. microwave (not above range)

3. apron front sink

4. double wall ovens

5. dishwasher

We are a two cook household, but don't often cook at the same time. Also we have a small child and will have another in the future. Another tidbit, my husband is 6'10" and range hoods that are flush with the front of the counter totally obstruct his ability to cook ( any ideas?)

We are not looking to significantly alter the structure of the plan ( move walls, move the kitchen across the house, etc.), but really looking for how to lay out the work zones, etc.

you'll see that the kitchen has already been laid out in the below floor plan, we did not do this. The house is a showcase home (SL Altadena Park) and the architect sent us the plans and kitchen layout used on the showcase home.

Any help is sincerely appreciated! I want this kitchen to be both beautiful and functional!

jennifer132 thank you for your response. I don't know if it's the best way to plan a kitchen, but I wanted to get the appliances squared away in the general area they go, and then design the cabinets after that. I do both kinds of cooking, cooktop to oven but I do plenty of baking as well. To the left of the main sink I plan on having uppers. The windows on that wall right now are over the sink and over the bench seat. There's 10 ft between the dishwasher and the bench seat. I like the idea of a shorter baking center, something like this: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/3e/33/33/3e3333e5be6f80176c5f83ed151ca9e8.jpg I'm planning on putting the microwave in the island near the prep sink, the sharp drawer. Here's the island as one long rectangle. In red (not to scale haha) is a possible place for the double oven, and I could put my lowered baking center to the left of it, and just normal uppers and lowers to the right of it. Thoughts? I really appreciate the input! (And part of me is wondering is I should switch places with the homework area, and have the double oven/baking center go where the homework nook is supposed to go, to be closer to the large pantry).

Doug already knows my views about cooktops on islands. So, I didn't share it when critiquing the original design. My opinion only, but putting a cooking surface on the island is a decision of last resort. Both safety and efficiency are compromised by this type of arrangement. I think the Buehl's idea of using that beautiful front window area for dining is inspired. It would get you and additional 28 sq.ft. in the kitchen. That's not chump change. That front window would be a lovely spot to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the kids. The light would be glorious. Seriously consider moving the kitchen to the rear, moving the dining room to take advantage of the window and sew/craft in the now freed up space in the front of the house, The old dining room in front could be used for a flex room/library/study/extra bedroom for overflow guests/sewing room/home office. Like Doug will tell you, everything is a compromise. Every decision effects another decision. It's just a question of how many comprises you have to make.

We're designing our kitchen. This will be used by a family of five, with my husband who does most of the cooking and myself doing most of the cleaning. Our three kids are very little but will grow up one day (right?) I absolutely want my sink under a window. We have nice views. We've researched the pros and cons of a stove in the island and are happy with it being there. Here are the two configurations our architect suggested. Thoughts? We tend to prefer the stove in the middle of the island but at the same time the stove at the end would give a nice uninterrupted look to the rest of the island. Anything we're missing?

First the house is nicely laid out. Congrats on that since so many are poorly laid out.

Looking first at the master, I'd get rid of the double doors into the master. Think of where light switches will be if you have double doors. :) Same with the bathroom and the master closet. Is your master bath that special that it needs double doors that you'll have to close before finding the light switches?

The guest bath has too many doors into it. I would just have the door from the hallway to the guest bathroom. Otherwise there may be problems with doors being locked and doors banging into one another. The advantage then would be that you could instead put a longer, more useful closet against the bathroom wall which would also help mitigate noise from the bathroom.

It's too hard to read your plans with the floor drawn in the way it is.

I would want the pantry closer to the fridge and the mud entry so when I enter I'm not running back and forth between the two to put away groceries or conversely to take them out when I need to cook.

I personally would prefer if you keep the pantry where it is, that it open on the other side so that you can have an L shaped counter. That would give you a nice long run of prep space and make it easier to push stuff to the cooktop.

Where is your ovens?

Is that a sink on the island?

The nook is very small. Do you really need the nook, seating at the island and a full dining room? Only you can answer that.

Also have you looked into induction cooking which is actually more precise than gas?

Thank you so much CP for pointing out all the double doors, and the two door situation in the hall bath, I will definitely be making all of those single doors and deleting the bedroom/bathroom door in the hall bath ( this will actually be a nursery and then an office so that door isn't really necessary). I've been reading these forums for quite a while and you always give very thoughtful advice.

I'm sorry about the hard to read plans, unfortunately the floor has been drawn on my PDF floorpans, so i can't really get rid of that.

You're right, the nook is small, I was worried about that until I saw the home (its been built in Alabama, you can find the pictures on Houzz by searching J. Wright Altadena park, if you're interested) and saw that a small breakfast table will work. And to answer your question, my current house has a nook, island seating and a dining room and all get used. Overkill, I know, but the way we live necessitates all three.

I was going to put the double ovens on the opposite end of the back cabinet run (on the window wall, next to the pantry). I thought that would give me some symmetry with the fridge on one end and the stoves on the other. But, I'm not the expert so i thought i would reach out here for a possibly better appliance layout.

No there is currently not a sink on the island, what you see drawn is, I believe, an ice maker, which we will not be installing. As of right now our island will not hold any appliances and will be made of cabinets with drawers.

I will leave the kitchen to the experts! I like the laundry on the first floor where I spend most of my time, but next to the master would not be ideal. Sometimes if I am up late, and DH has gone to bed, I will run a load of laundry. Not sure where else it could be moved without making major changes.
