Cabinet knobs/pulls & appliance pulls
Comments (2)I am also doing panels for myt refrigerator, dishwasher. I went with a mixture of polished nickel and glass knobs. I did amerock bin pulls and the matching appliance pulls for dishwasher and refrig. I did glass knobs on my glass front cabs and ice box latches on my lower doors and doors above refrig. I think the important thing is for the finish to match. I ordered samples of several knobs, pulls and latches that I liked and then looked at them together to see which looked the most cohesive. Some finishes just don't match even though technically the same. Some of the polished nickel was darker than others. I think you can mix and match but check to see the tones are the same first. Comments (30)I came across this post and just wanted to add that in our old house, we had the cheapest of cheap builder grade 80's oak cabinets that were a terrible shade of orangish. DH, like a lot of men, has an issue with painting "the wood!" "You'll never get the same finish!" Well, actually, yes you can as long as you use a good oil based paint. But anyway...so we comprimised and picked up some "Liquid Sandpaper" from Home Depot or Lowes (can't remember which). You put it on with a rag, wait a bit, and then you can apply a new stain--though it should be darker or brighter (cherry) to cover whats there. It works by opening up the surface and allows the stain to penetrate into the finish...then after 2 hours it "closes" back up and holds in the stain. It took us all of a night to do the entire kitchen. We took the doors off and all the hardware of course to get the best finish on the door fronts. Total cost...about 30.00 with plenty of leftover product. And we too had what looked like "wood paper" on the sides of the cabinets but it took the stain just as well as other areas. I believe thats because the stain doesn't actually get all the way down to the wood, but rather gets encased just under the top coat. But I'm not sure, because it certainly looked like the cabinets had always been the new color--the wood grain was apparent and the finish retained a beautiful shine after. I'm not saying its necessarily a permanent fix but the ease and inexpense created instant gratification. And in our new house when we remodeled the kitchen...it was off-white cabinets or else! :) They are just so timeless......See MoreCabinet Pulls - Do you mix sizes and styles?
Comments (11)Definitely personal preference. In our case, we used the same size pulls on all drawers (4"). We used one pull on drawers = 30". We have 18", 24", 27", 30", 31", 31.5", 33", and 36" drawers and, like you, the vast majority of our bases are drawer bases. The only exceptions are the sink bases and the 6" pullouts flanking the cooktop. Cup pulls vs "regular" pulls...originally I wanted cup pulls, but then when we realized that to open the bottom drawers you have to reach under to get your hand in the pull that it would be more difficult than just reaching down from the top, we went w/the "regular". In the end, I'm glad we did as I like our pulls better than the cup pulls for our cabinets & kitchen style. The issue of being able to fit my DH's bigger hands was a concern for us as well when we were considering the cup pulls; since you're also concerned, I'd buy a couple of the larger pulls and try them out. We bought several different pulls & knobs and tried them on our old cabinets to get a feel for what they would be like using them as well as to get a general idea of what they would look like. 24" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer: 27" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer: 33" Drawer, 2 pulls/drawer and 18" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer & trash pullout: 36" Drawer, 2 pulls/drawer:...See MoreAny fave drawer/cabinet handles/pulls for white wood old kitchen?
Comments (1)For some reason bin pulls never called to me either. I used the RH Ephram pull in ORB and SN on white cabinets. Someone once said they didn't have SN at the turn of the century but it is not a dis-similar look to an aged polished nickle. I really like both finishes with the white. I found that different handles I preferred in different finishes (i.e. didn't like in PN but liked in ORB.) I liked that it is very simple but not boring. They are 4 inches center to center. I used Aubrey knobs. http://media.restorationhardware.com/is/image/rhis/prod1080030_HW07?$PD$ Lost of people use these traditional pulls, made by RH and others. http://media.restorationhardware.com/is/image/rhis/prod1278084_HW07?$PD$ Love glass knobs, like (not love) glass pulls. I used glass knobs and PN Ephram pulls on my desk. Just to be a geek, if I had to do it over again I would get a sample of and possible use this reproduction handle. It is 3.5 inches center to center (from screw centers.) I would probably do polished nickel and even consider "aging it" with solution they sell. When it is 'aged' it is not polished but looks more like a pewter but not the rustic design that you see in most pewter styles. I looked high and low for this style - the RN bistro is similar but seems a little more 'designed.' My post tinged with a little regret, clearly :) Hope this helps.
