What a nightmare that must have been trying to clean all the grease from the floor! I always find that no matter how well I hand wash the pan, that it still feels greasy. I ALWAYS end up running it through the dishwasher too which finally eliminates any greasy feel. How long did it take to clean the floor up??

So sorry you had to deal with that! And no leftovers!! That's worse than having to clean up the mess!!

My dog also has separation anxiety issues and usually goes with me everywhere. However I do draw the line at taking him to someone else's home. I left him at home yesterday with the TV on (Animal Planet - his fav), the garbage up and out of the way and a few special treats before I left. When I got home about 8 hours later, he was up on the couch (allowed) and watching TV and was fine. Very glad to see me, though!!

The separation anxiety thing is kinda my fault :-) When I got him as a 10 week old puppy, he came to work with me every day (crated) and got attention from coworkers and customers constantly so he just never got used to being left alone. He has gotten better over the years but still would rather be by my side than anywhere else - he even lays by the bathtub when I am in it!! He just gets into mischief if left alone for too long, so any diversions (and removal of any temptations) I provide, the better he will tolerate it.

If I were the dog's owner, I would have been embarrassed to death. I certainly would have cleaned it and apologized over and over again.

Actually it didn’t take long to clean up. I have a Shark steam mop. Pulled the grease right up after 4 swipes! That mop is amazing. Of course we used paper towel first.

Dogs owner is my son, can’t say much to him. But he was busy pulling the dog away from the spill as doggie was set & determined to finish the meal he found.

You should have used it to make broth, and boiled the heck out of it. Nothing could live through that LOLOL!

The dog is pretty smart. I think he planned it. He knew we were busy talking & made a silent escape!! And he was after the good stuff too! He passed the veggies & casserole.

Dances, I thought of that but there was dog & cat hair in it. Yuck.

Definitely sounds like an event that may eventually evoke fond memories for everyone including the dog, and will show up in future retellings of past family holidays.

Oh no! I can commiserate! One year my Afghan hound pulled the roaster pan holding the freshly baked Christmas ham off the stove top where it was resting before we took it to the in laws for our Christmas dinner. Not only a huge greasy mess but we had to find a ham on Christmas morning and bake it. We were a little bit late getting there but we had the food.

Sorry you lost the leftovers but thankfully it happened after the meal!

Honestly, when others clean up messes (and I'm thinking of one specific "other") it's never well done. Might as well do it myself. I'm sure your son would have preferred this not to happen. It's not the end of the world. Go buy another turkey. I was thinking of getting one myself since we ate out and I love turkey soup.

I'm sure it would have been fine well cooked, even in the pressure cooker, but you couldn't get the image of the dog, the floor out of your mind. Best to start over.

Sorry to hear about the mess... but at the same time I have to kind of laugh. I was moving the carcass pan out to the enclosed porch to cool and my big cat wanted to "help". Tripping over him, I almost lost the whole mess to the floor. By the time I got back in from putting the pan on the porch to clean up what did spill... there he was, happily licking it up.

Sometimes pet chaos can end up being some of the funniest holiday moments.. at least after the cleanup is done.

OMG! That's what Thanksgiving is all about ya know....making memories. Not forgotton soon...eh...? lol

Geeesh, JeCrigler, between the dog stealing the turkey leftovers and the guest who refused to eat from your plates, you had quite a memorable Thanksgiving! Hopefully, everyone involved will be able to look back and laugh at this someday. Glad cleaning up the mess wasn't too bad!

What s mess and that’s a story you’ll be telling for a long time. We had an event after dinner as well. The hostesses ‘ dog apparently had enough of DDs dog acting like a prima dona and bit her in the nose. There was a lot of blood and the poor woman felt terrible. We took an Uber to a 24 hr animal ER to have the dog looked at. No serious harm done but she has to take antibiotics and wear a collar for two weeks. We were just happy the offending dog waited until the end of the evening to do his damage so we got in our cocktail hour, dinner and conversation.

Dawn, I just rolled with it but it was MUCH better to vent here than say anything yesterday.

When my first husband was a boy, they had an all-black cat named "Tar Baby". After the main course was served, the turkey was cleared to the kitchen along with the side dishes, and dessert was served in the DR. His mother went back into the kitchen for something and let out a loud laugh. There was Tar Baby, his entire body INSIDE the turkey with only his long tail sticking out, switching back and forth in utter bliss. Don't know what happened to the leftovers, but since Tar Baby was INSIDE the turkey, I hope they kept him.

DD has a very cute little black cat with white paws and a white front. After the main course, all the food went to the kitchen on the island and a variety of pies was served in the DR. DD sits where she has a view of the kitchen when the door is open, which it was. She suddenly leapt from her chair, yelling the cat's name, and raced into the kitchen. The cat had gotten a nice big piece of white meat and was gobbling it up on the floor. First husband was there and we looked at one another and said "Tar Baby" has returned! No, they did not throw out the turkey.

Oh no. What a mess. It'll be funny -- someday. (Like Tar Baby, lol!)

Well, it's been proven the dog is not vegan. ;)

One of our neighbors years ago had a beautiful and athletic Weimaraner. She could clear their chain link fence in a single bound LOL. The neighbors were pretty philosophical about lost shoes and so forth. They just automatically went to Bill's house dot-dot. Bill finally got a new fence shortly after Labor Day one year, when he came to find Gretchen contentedly eating a whole brisket on the patio.

First reaction was that I laughed with an Oh NO!. Second reaction was to commiserate on the clean-up which must have been a real mess. Third reaction was for son and his dog as they must have felt horrible.

But as others have mentioned, this is going to become part of the thanksgiving lore for your family, along with the bone china vegan.

Oh gosh...I can’t even imagine facing that after hosting a dinner for four much less 20 including your surprise guest! I cringed as I read your post but now you have me interested in that Shark Steam mop! I’ve been wondering how well they work. As for the left overs, I’m not a left overs kind of gal, so that part would have been a blessing in disguise for me. :c)

I don't think that was separation anxiety; It was what an unsupervised dog might do when in a strange place and smelling cooked turkey. Whatever the case, I'm sorry for all parties. It must have been a mess and took the fun out of left overs.

You'll laugh about it someday but that was indeed a horrible mess. Reminds me of the dogs in "The Christmas Story" running off with the turkey. I took my two dogs over to daughters because college grandson was home and dogs love him. They were very well behaved and got to lick plates. Her two Siamese cats weren't thrilled and never came downstairs.

I had a dog who stole unattended food too..... but that is pack dog mentality. What the top dog doesn't finish is their rightful meal.

Not funny now, I know, but in time you will look back and laugh at this? Maybe??? :) What a mess ugh..but thankfully the dog wasn't burned.

Even when it happened, nobody jumped up. We thought a plate slipped in the sink. Then DD said “wouldn’t it be funny if Sparky pulled the turkey down?” Then we all took off running except me.

I was taking my blood pressure with my machine & it was just inflating with air!!

Reading some of the stories in this thread have reminded me of the time hubby and I were sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Amsterdam. We heard yelling and turned to look just as a big black lab ran by with a roast in it's mouth followed by a very upset man wearing a full chef's uniform. I believe the man was also waving a wooden spoon around. I don't speak Dutch, but I think I can safely say that what was coming out of the man's mouth were profanities.

After they passed by, we returned to our meal. A few minute later, the chef came walking back empty handed. Apparently, he wasn't able to get the roast back from the dog.
