What happened to my jelly bean plant?

I believe it is a sedum rubrotinctum/jelly bean plant. It's the first succulent I've bought and I'm really attached to it. Last weekend I've watered it (it's almost winter in the UK so I've been told to only water it once a month) and I've not looked at it since as I've been out of the house most days. Today I got a chance to look at it and most of the the stalks are dropping and not looking good.

Does anyone know what could have caused this?

Last week it looked fine and healthy (see first picture for reference)!

It could be thirsty: what are temps like where it is kept? If warm enough, plant needs to be watered. I water mine more often than 1x/mo, close to 1x/week. And it is etiolaing - it isn't receiving enough light

Is it supposed to go dormant for the winter? Have you kept it indoors through the winter before, or is this the first year? I'm sorry I'm not of more help...I keep all of my sedums outdoors year-round. Had a couple of them indoors for a short time and they didn't like it.

Hi violetta...that bad kitty..LOL..Don't worry about cat fur..I found cat/dog/bird feathers in soil.. Though if there's large fuzzy balls I'd remove them Sorry about your Jellybean..they're such pretty succulents, especially when grown in full sun and turn red. If it were my plant, I'd remove a portion of beads, if possible, water, place extra beads on top, barely in soil. Make sure soil is well-draining, especially if beads are buried. On the other hand, if you want to dump entire pot on newspaper, remove as many beads as you find, then pot up again. What type of pot are u using? I find a shallow pot works best. I've a few retanguler, shallow pots, though they don't have drainage holes, but work fine..leaves are sowed in rows like a cornfield..lol.. Good luck, and I'd place in a different spot to keep your plant, otherwise kitty will decide to play games again..Toni

If I were you I would leave them be and not worry for a bit...every year when my beans come up, I swear there is something wrong with them and every year they do well.

naola I suspect you planted them too soon if you're in zone 5 and the weather turned cool. Most beans shouldn't be planted until soil temperatures are about 65 degrees or they either won't germinate or they'll germinate so slowly in the cool soil that many will rot in the ground. Little tiny holes in bean leaves usually means the culprit is flea beetles. Maybe you can plant the beans again when the soil temps are optimal. And do crawdads eat bean seedlings?

Looks great! I'd leave them dry now, and hold off watering until they send out shoots, and then water once they have a few decent roots, it should only take a couple of weeks. Each individual bean should grow to a new plant, as well as those bunches, so it's gonna look fantastic once all those begin growing! Here're some that started a few weeks back. They'd all gone stretching after light when I found them, already with long roots/stems, and fell over when I put them in the pot, but this one is turning out pretty decently. ~Aaron

They must have been hardy sedums - there are quite a few - to stay outdoors year-round. Otherwise they would freeze, as would Sedum rubrotinctum. It is not hardy, and it has to be kept indoors in zones lower than z9 during winter.

I've kept it inside as outside it's too cold. All the stems have started dying from the bottom up... I assume it's a fungus that developed because it was over watered :(

Hi Arina, gauge if they need watering by checking for any pruny appearance or wilting. I think the advice is sound, but safer to check the plant regularly to gauge its needs :) If you want to save the plant, snip off the green parts well above any rotting tissue - sterilise your tool with each cut to prevent the fungus/bacteria from spreading. Thoroughly clean/sterilise the pot and do not reuse the old soil. Let them dry/callous and replant into a fresh mix. They will eventually grow new roots.
