Comments (8)I doubt she is having a problem with Honey bees, which are the ones mysteriously disapearing. If they are honey bees , I'm with you. Let's feed them too. Give them their own feeders! :-) My guess is she has yellowjackets. She needs to make sure her feeders aren't leaking, do away with the yellow, and make sure there are bee guards. I mostly have problems with the occasional wasp at the feeders and ants under the feeders, if there is the slightest spill. By the way, my feeders have always had the yellow parts. I haven't had enough problem with bees or wasps, to bother changing to the new way....See MoreBees on the hummingbird feeder
Comments (8)Yes, it's supposed to be 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Last winter the bees got out of control on the hummingbird feeder and some would get into the feeder and drown. Guess there was a hive too close to here. But before spring, the problem went away...as soon as the Arizona Ash trees started blooming, the bees went to it, then other plants were blooming. Now my problem is that certain kinds of birds have developed a fondness for the nectar. The hummingbirds don't like that! I haven't heard of wasps or bees stinging the hummers....See MoreBees on Hummingbird feeders
Comments (10)Bees can be a big problem in some parts of the country. Please do NOT use any type of oil because if the hummingbirds brush against it the oil will get on their feathers and can cause health issues. You must start with a feeder that is specifically designed and advertised to be bee-proof. Then take care when making nectar to not make it too sweet. For hummingbirds a 4-1 ratio is good, too sweet will attract more bees than birds. Then after hanging clean off drips or spills, I like to spray them off with water from a spray bottle. Any little drip or spill will attract some bees. That should do it, but if not, hang another feeder nearby (not too close) containing a much sweeter mixture and the bees will move to that feeder leaving yours to the birds. Comments (4)I use a clear plastic dome over the feeder and this works well (picture from April 13, 2015). The new hummers check it out and get used to it very quickly. It could be a problem if it's very windy in the location - I put a different one over a feeder that gets strong winds off the bay and it rocked too much. The metal baffle is left over from that winter when I had a suet feeder on the pole before the hummingbirds came (hummers are seasonal here). Orioles accept the dome too. The catbird was probably just a bystander and the turkey couldn't care less about nectar. April 29, 2017 Claire...See Morecatherinet
