Why the elimination of 'net neutrality' will affect many in small towns or on limited budgets:

(excerpt) It’s Saturday morning at a café near the museum in Winlock, Washington, and Michelle Conrow is eating brunch while surfing the internet on her laptop. What might seem a banal activity for many is a luxury for Michelle. The internet at her house just outside the town is primitive by today’s standards, with speeds similar to the dial-up days of the 1990s. It took three days to download Microsoft Office to her new computer.

Many of the 1,300 residents in this rural area, which was once the US’s second largest egg producer, report frustratingly slow connections. There’s no binging on the latest must-watch Netflix show or streaming music on Spotify to suit your mood. No quick downloading of a podcast for your journey to work as you grab your coat. No running several devices simultaneously as parents catch up with internet banking or shopping on Amazon while their children chat on social media and watch YouTube videos.

Some have no broadband at all because the only provider, CenturyLink, has maxed out its system and there is a waiting list to get a connection, while others live outside the service area. Conrow and others have been complaining about the service for years. And if the internet’s top regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), gets its way, Conrow worries things may never get better.

While this may be, I don't think this is the essence of the issue at hand.

Yes, small towns and rural areas don't get the same service options more inhabited places get. That's economics, not political policy. Whether you're talking about availability of internet service, or phone lines, or cable TV or paved roads or water districts or central sewage systems or whatever - live in a populated area to have the best choices. If you're in a small town, not so much. Fast internet service isn't a constitutional right.

Net neutrality is more about free flow of traffic. Netflix is one of the heaviest users of bandwidth - internet service providers need to accommodate the traffic. Without that rule, internet providers like AT&T, or Century Link, or Comcast, could charge extra to the content originators or to customers using that added bandwidth at peak times or, without agreement, simply slow down that traffic to make it less convenient.

Or, Comcast could slow down traffic from competing Direct TV or Dish or Amazon Prime, and tell you could get better service from them directly or by paying a supplement.

The current administration seems bent on changing a lot of existing rules by administrative action and Executive Orders. That's because Congress isn't cow-towing to the president and won't pass his nonsensical ideas. Whatever gets changed can be changed back in due course when the current guy is put out to pasture. So it's not all gloom and doom forever for this or any of the other stupid things they're trying to do.

We live in the northern county of San Diego in an area adjacent to chaparral. I've seen coyotes, squirrels, bunnies, hawks, gopher (yes, I actually saw the gopher - but my husband took care of that - RIP), and I understand there are owl boxes courtesy of our HOA. The bunnies are eating my husband's lawn (and sometimes my plants). The squirrels come in to eat too. The hills are dry this time of year, but we have kept our lawn and plants watered, making them yummy meals for the critters. We finished putting up some kind of fencing we were told is used to keep bunnies out. Ironically, the bunnies chewed through the fence where the back gate goes out to the wildlands - or from the wildlands into our backyard. A perfectly sized hole with nice little bits of fence scattered around the wrought iron gate. Although I did have to chuckle about it, we did work hard putting up that fence in the hottest part of the year. The rabbits were probably laughing too (rightly so - what a couple of dingdongs we are). Now my husband wants to shoot those bunnies with a pellet gun (he'd rather use something bigger, but I don't think that's legal - I'm not sure killing rabbits is legal in our area). I can understand his frustration, but I'm glad to see all the postings - you have my sincere appreciation - and will ask him to help me out with the bloodmeal and/or ammonia. I'll let you know whether it works for us or not. If those things don't work and I can't convince my husband to replace that fencing with something more sturdy, I'm afraid the rabbits will be meeting the gopher's demise. By the way, we did try other methods to deter the gopher (hair in the tunnel, plugging the tunnel) - then I read several posts and determined there was only one way to take care of the gopher; it was not the way I wanted, but the last resort. It's funny, when I asked a similar question a few months ago, everyone here told me to reduce the price. IMHO, if showings have slowed a lot the last couple weeks, you've lost your "new listing freshness" and now it becomes a matter of being priced right. I'm in a slow market, but houses that are priced right or well, sell within a few weeks. You can lower your price without mentioning "reduced price" and looking desperate -- which you're not. Just lower it that $10K to get into the next lower price bracket, get back into all of the realtors' emails, print up new flyers, but don't draw attention to the new price. You'll know if the price reduction was "enough" if your showings jump back up again. If not, you have to decide how low you're willing to go and how long you're willing to wait. Because if you're not "priced to sell," you only bet is appealing to someone emotionally as their "dream house" that they have to have, despite the price, which is gonna take longer.

We generally lounge in the living room with the laptop and iPad while watching tv. I take the iPad with me wherever, be it the kitchen for a recipe, up to the library (I know, sounds grand, but it's just a 9x13 bedroom I converted), or outside. They slide under the couch when not in use. We also have a desktop in the office (another converted bedroom, we only need 1 and have 3). DH mostly uses that for things like paying the bills, photo editing since he is really into that and it needs tons of processing capacity, and I use it when I need to print things. Someday I will updat my iPad software so I can print, but I've got other stuff to do. We also have assorted cords for things on every window sill downstairs. I am trying to find a place for a charging station thanks to GW. I would LOVE to get all that stuff organized and tucked away. I think the above suggestion to think about why you gravitate to the current location will help a lot with where to put a computer area in the new space. For me, since I do not currently have a job that requires me to tote a laptop around, it's not a big issue. Plus between residency and traveling to assorted professional meetings I have become pretty good at balancing a computer at just about any angle. Being tied to a set spot with an actual chair to sit upright in feels a bit boring now. I also like to multitasking my time wasting/procrastinating.

OKwriter, I'm a sales rep (pharma)and we do many business trips at the business casual level. And I can tell you, there are always some who wear jeans, running shoes (sneakers), and sleeveless blouses, open-toed shoes or flimsy sandals. However, I can also tell you that "upper management" remembers these wayward souls come promotion time. Now, I for one, don't care to travel with anything more than a carry on bag. I'm amazed the reps I see in the hotel lobby with two large, checked bags, and a couple carry-ons. WHAT ARE THEY, MOVING THERE!!!!??? For me, for a 5 day stay, I take 2 pair of slacks, (I love knits to avoid pressing, but either way is fine). Three blouses and yes, I repeat wear them. Make them interchangeable with the 2 slacks, and good grief, not exposing cleavage. A leather belt if needed. Two pair of neutral shoes, I prefer a low heel pump, that I have shined ahead of time. Usually black, navy, or brown depending on the color selections. I pack matching trouser socks or knee high hose. Enough undies, and one pajama. I would take a pair of Bermuda shorts and one polo, not tee shirt for any defined casual group outing or, perhaps a company BBQ. Remember to buy the 3 oz. shampoos, soaps, so you can scoot through security easily. Those gals who pack their quart size shampoo, conditioners, amaze me! Simple accessories...think conservative and classic (and lightweight((my mantra)))Earrings, gold necklace, or a couple colored ones to vary with the repeat of the blouses to vary the look. One loose sweater, or unconstructed jacket that can be seen over any of the blouses for the chilly meeting room. Some might bring gym shoes and workout clothes, but never the gym shoes to be worn at meeting. Boom, you're done, and will be perfectly fine.

No I hadn’t heard that. I usually listen to the news every day. I’ve avoided it this week though so the holiday could be as stress free as possible. I actually think McMaster is being generous. Even a kindergartner would have more respect for others and the way he behaves publically then that baboon.

Many of the public comments used in support of ending neutrality were false copy and paste statements and many used fraudulently, people's names and addresses used without consent. Comments by people who have died and therefore weren't alive to write them. There is over 80% public support for keeping the net fair and open to all yet this vote was done to benefit a few large companies.

No you won't see your prices jump right away or be restricted from certain websites, but it will come slowly, slower speeds unless you buy X package. Maybe you have trouble sending email or other information. Wait, the new package fixes all that, it's just a few dollars more........it will be subtle.

Do you want less choice? Why let anyone chip away at the great thing we have right now? Remember when some G mail users couldn't send email and got a message saying can't send g mail? Try our version instead. There never was anything wrong with g mail except a competitor broke it temporarily for some folks to try and get them to switch out of frustration. That's why the neutrality rules were enforced. Neutrality not a bad thing but verizon lawyers will tell you it is.

There's still a chance to defend free internet but we must insist to our reps that they defend it. Don't let corrupt appointed fcc puppets overturn the voice of the people. Free Speech and Neutrality now and always.
