Anyone choose to not have a formal dining room?
Comments (34)Our plan has a formal dining, but we are going to use it as a piano/reading room. Instead we're going to use what was labeled as a hearth room for our dining area. It's plenty large enough(19'x15') to accomodate a big table for our family of 10 and is totally open to the kitchen. I like that I'll be able to be working in the kitchen with my older girls while my younger ones are in plain eyesight/earshot at the table doing schoolwork/crafts. We are informal, casual people, and having a separate, really formal dining space just isn't us, nor is it our friends and family. It's still under construction, but here's a shot of our future dining area(the "hearth" room). The original house plan called for a fireplace to the right, but we nixed it as there is one just around the corner in the living room and instead opted for a big window that looks out over our pond and trees. I'm planning on a hutch between the 2 big windows. French doors will lead to a grilling porch and the other door will lead to a deck.. eventually ;-)....See MoreDo you have a table pad for your dining room table?
Comments (46)Also got BergerPads in May of 2010, dont remember which of these we got but guessing for a $500 dining 4seat dining set, we went with just the good (especially since I'd only wanted black anyway). Its textured, really like it. We have a new table we'll still get 2nd quote on but will only consider if its significantly lower then the Berger ones for our current table. MAY 2010 For a square cornered table pad 54” x 54” Pricing are as follows: Best – Any Color / Any Bottom – Unconditional Lifetime Warranty $291.60 Better – Any Solid Color / Brown Cotton Bottom Only – 15 Year Warranty $233.28 Good – Black Solid Only / Brown Cotton Only – 5 Year Warranty $174.96 (Prices include $.01 per square inch for the magnets) We Guarantee to meet or beat any reasonable price offer!...See MoreDo you have a red formal dining room?
Comments (25)Thanks everyone! I got a few more red samples yesterday and am waiting for DH to get home from his trip tonight to vote on them... Painters are coming tomorrow - agh!!!! But currently the finalists are SW Bolero, SW Rave Red, and RL Burning Umber (matched by SW). I think I have about 12 quarts of different red samples LOL. With all my current painting angst, I have literally paid over $150 in samples of reds, golds and browns! Yikes!!!! Thank goodness we will NOT be painting again for a VERY long time!!!!!! I'll post pics when it's all done on Friday! =) Thanks everyone!...See MoreNeed help with formal living room off of dining room
Comments (15)Candid! The first thing I saw in both rooms were the window treatments. The living room valances, although formal in design, are a dated look even for kitchens. The dining room drapes and swag should be framing the stage in a theater; they're just too heavy and dark. The red art in the dining room and the blue art in the living room are "off" elements in contrast to you furniture. The red ones might work in your kitchen, and the blue could theme another space. Dried floral arrangements and sticks as decor faded a long time ago. The living room rug should be as large as the one in the dining room. What to do... Here's a favorite house of mine and you have the furniture to pull off a similar look if you just simplify and get a larger rug and some side tables and a coffee table that are in scale with your other pieces. Click through the link with the photo to see other rooms in this lovely home. Brighten up your space by painting both rooms as below (believed to be Navajo White walls and White Dove Trim.) Consider wainscot for the dining room and a new chandelier. Updated window treatments that match in both rooms, larger rugs and less clutter would improve things. If you do paint, then removing all the tchotkes will happen anyway. Pack them up and only put them back judiciously....See Morettodd
