Comments (27)My dream is to create a Bonsai using this famous "Angel Oak Tree". I love the branching structure on this tree but it is the opposite of Bonsai and is more like a Giant. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://stylefrizz.com/img/angel-oak-tree-l.jpg&imgrefurl=http://stylefrizz.com/200810/easy-like-the-angel-oak-tree/&usg=__l5As7K3ZeVcJcU8dLB7w1MlSPyM=&h=564&w=850&sz=168&hl=en&start=0amp;zoom=1&tbnid=JycuaYpQImageM:&tbnh=100&tbnw=151&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dangel%2Boak%2Btree%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1920%26bih%3D895%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=106&vpy=107&dur=735&hovh=183&hovw=276&tx=152&ty=84&ei=k86eTI-XI42-sQPZoJ3WAQ&oei=k86eTI-XI42-sQPZoJ3WAQ&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=33&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0...See MoreSome random pics
Comments (9)In order with some information. A view of a few leaves from an Operculicarya borealis. Neil technically it's not a succulent to the best of what I can recall it's a relative of the cashew ? . It can survive for some extended periods of time with out water in it's natural growing area. I imagine it could be kept (and live) on the dryer side for a season but would/could become to overly dry if cultivating in a pot for longer than that I guess it would be counterproductive to not water it in pot cultivating as needed as most seem to enjoy the annual foliage growth & spreads and it's changing colors. Hoya carnosa variegate Sorry Neil but this one is a succulent they fall in the Apocynaceae family ( dongbane),a vine that is more tropical in a sense Tip just do it & when you do it be there with that water, when they want it not when you feel like it or want to . This one ranks right up there ( high) in the area of Mikes favorite plant type, being that it's variegated and displays nice fragrant flowing spreading from the vines in an umbrella shaped forming several cluster(s). Some sort of miniature geranium cultivate, Succulent meaning juice loving ? then yes it loves juice so it is a succulent Also they're allegedly drought tolerant even though it wont or cant grow in drought. ( figures huh ?) I maintain a few minature Pelargonium ( year round ) as they are allegedly a great pest deterrent , to keep em growing yr round so they can be the pest prevention plant of taboo or reality and sometimes even flower during the winter they do like some occasional watering for that juice loving habit. Scizobasis intrica a South African bulb and YES it is a succulent It's over 30 but less than 38 years old. a few seasons ago I let this one go dry and remain dry ( no hand watering) for two years. After a re-intro to water and regular watering I had used a barber chair side razor and removed it's light brown thick outer layer shortly after the peelingl it developed it's ' split personality'. Cant say if it's a record size but I could be close. IMO ( I might be better to say as fact), a Boweia that old with care would need a much ( very much) wider pot Nicolas, It was in the same family as the Boweia that you mentioned back in the days when I it was a wee bit smaller..... & Depending on who you hear it from( as the plant jury returns) it's allegedly been guilty in the second degree of mocking the Boweia and is being sentenced to be a Drimia. Sorry to be the barer of this news but I hope it wins it's case in the plant appellant higher court and return to it's place next to the Boweia in the Hyacinthaceae family. Eldwood Slow to grow yes but the roots had no problems adapting to any sharp gritty porous mix (or substrate) I've lost three leaves off it apx 2.5 years ago via that critter called scale. IMO honestly, I don't think any Adro ( herrei included) isn't going to grow any slower in an all "rock type" substrate soil than any standard or gritty mix ( if this blurb made any sense at all then you know Adros ) The reason for the chunkier substrate preference I use here is so I can water with out the worry of rot when I do water. Watering and it's timing is something that is about as easy as a can of worms. For reference the herrei pot has less circumference and is Apx the same depth as a standard 2.5 inch terra cotta. It has been in the pot seen sense the scale issue was resolve. IMO the best solution for rot is to water it when it needs water and not worry about rot As to how often I water depends it isn't weekly but I could if I wanted to push it a bit & knowing I'd rather deal with an overly moistened adro than an overly dry one. Aloe Christmas carol You can tell em if it's a succulent or not Neil my fingers are kind of tired. C. Gollum lady finger AKA skinny finger A form of jade Originally I wasn't going to post the second set of pics as Neil was ( or is) stalking my older/oldest Adromischus anticardum ( also a marianie) To the best of my knowledge I think he had asked for a leaf or two from me ( nothing personal Neil, not no but hello no). By me misunderstanding which specific adro he meant( and the the hoarder that I am) I had sent him something else ( see pic below) Although I did pick up another anticardum for him and it's doing it's thing in one of them standard terra cotta pots. I was going to surprise him later next spring and send it to him but thought it be better to tease him and let him wait it out. I also wanted to met Mikes request of showing some of the unique pots I use to cultivate succulents in. Next one is..... Ironically, when it comes to conophytum and the one( Yes only one) I ever lost was also dropped that was potted in terra cotta Over time I've had seven different conos and still have six of them I've yet to see any of mine in flower IMO there an easy to keep alive succulent, more of a decoration item that I get to breath on every now and then. Last on my second post: Adro cristatus var. cristatus ( sometimes it's seen here & is called Adro cristatus Cv. 'key lime' it is what it is.) I trained the one seen over the first two seasons of the seven it's been here ( More like I forced it . ) to remain a miniature version of the same. Neil thanks for adopting them 2 smaller leaves from this one I kind of needed the space The two you got came from this side though Nicolas yes that's true a pot size and it's shape has an influence on roots yet the roots have an even bigger influence on the top parts of the plant I hope to assure you that a slow growing adro in a smaller pot equals very very close to the same growth speed in a bigger pot. although the leaves are able to become bigger ( IE fuller. more rounded in a sense) in an over potted ( or larger) pot in the same amount of time as the smaller one. Note: I have no intentions to encourage or insist that anyone ( or you)use a bigger pot for any of your adros . As the adro rules go to over pot them is ( more times than not) to over water them Yet rules can be broken as long as the same principles are applied. Like many of the other succulents cultivated here I use no suggested watering techniques but my own. A scheduled watering of doubts an skews or suggested by others that don't even live here is simply out of the question....See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
