Mixing Metal Finishes

The cabinetry in our basement wet bar will be a dark navy color. We picked out this faucet from Kohler in the Vibrant Polished Brass finish - https://www.us.kohler.com/us/catalog/productDetails.jsp?productId=420273&skuId=352534 and the hardware will likely be this Emtek Newport Knob in the Satin Brass finish - http://emtek.com/cabinet-knobs/newport. I love the look of mixed metals but just didn't know if mixing the finish of one metal is okay. What are your thoughts?

As well, do you think it is okay to have polished nickel hardware in the kitchen with this Kohler faucet in the Vibrant Stainless finish? https://www.us.kohler.com/us/ARTIFACTS-1H-KITCHEN-W-PD-SPRY/productDetail/kitchen-sink-faucets/1117942.htm?skuId=1117941&brandId=1117208 or would you go with Polished Nickel hardware and Polished Nickel faucet. I was really wanting to do Antique Brass pendants over our island where the Kitchen Sink Faucet is located.

Rules are made to be broken, especially design rules! However, since I'm not a big fan of satin finishes, I would not choose the satin brass knobs.

While it's fine to have mismatched kitchen faucet and hardware- if you have the choice why wouldn't you have them match? Especially when you're introducing another metal for the light fixture.

What is the style of your bathroom? I looked up the faucet and it looks more old fashioned than modern so I think you can be more flexible. It's a very pretty faucet. Can you purchase one pull to see how it will look on the cabinet and with your faucet? That was a trick learned from GW kitchens and it was amazing how the pulls I thought would be perfect were just so wrong! I'm not saying yours will be wrong, just that everything changes in person. I mixed finishes in 3 bathrooms and my kitchen. It can be done but requires a lot of thought, time and willingness to take a risk. And I think each company's finishes are slightly different so it helps to see the actual products together if at all possible. Our powder room is the most eclectic and certainly not for everyone. Chrome faucet on Carrera marble countertop (a safe start), new mirror in antique gold paint (won at action) in a bamboo design, new sconces in antique gold finish to match mirror, repurposed antique brass door knob, antique glass pulls for walnut cabinetry. Somehow it all works, people love it and absolutely no one has mentioned the finishes either positively or negatively. For me the key is to keep the styles consistent and keep the finishes consistent where your eye falls. Having said all that, if mixing finishes makes you itchy, then by all means don't do it. You need to love your space.

we chose chrome faucets and towel bars & hooks. The door hardware is ORB, as are the knobs on the doors and drawers of the built ins. I need to choose a light fixture for the center of the room; I intend to choose ORB or similar. Here is the vanity view.

We haven’t installed everything yet. I’m just worried bc I can’t visualize it. I hope I don’t have regrets. Someone told me give yourself time and you’ll love it just may be initial shock once everything is changed. I was looking for some advice or sample pictures. I did search for ideas but I don’t see those two metals mixed for what comes up

Thank you! The sconce is listed as a "wall sconce" by Aerin Lighting. It also comes in Antique Brass and it pivots - may be helpful over floating shelves. It will be hardwired. I've been searching for a sconce that is somewhat affordable and does not look like a bathroom or entry/hallway fixture, nor industrial. I liked the clean lines of this one, but am certainly open to suggestions. We cannot use can lights due to the roof line above the ceiling - existing can lights nearly caught on fire due to space restrictions (and I suspect moisture). They no longer work, but cannot be removed without tearing out the ceiling, hence a remodel. The ceiling will be stained somewhat dark. I like bronze spots best, but worry about mixing colors. If you advise that bronze spots will work with brass sconces, then that is the direction I would prefer over the various nickel finishes. Will it be OK to use black metal wine racks if we use bronze spots? The spots are by Pure Edge Lighting and called "Rebel" I really need and look forward to your professional advice! Thank you!

Antique brass in the kitchen is fine with stainless anything and every thing, I'd match the luster on the brass. .I would not add a third finish in the kitchen. If you want polished nickel in the kitchen? Eliminate brass totally in the kitchen and stick to stainless as your second metal.

As to you can do "whatever you want"? O course you can! But you can choose to be miserable too : )

In other words....... two metals. In whatever place. Not three

I love the finish on that faucet and would look for hardware to match rather than change both to polished nickel. I also think antique brass pendants would look great with it! Having said that, I think the brass lights would look great with polished nickel too, but I wouldn't do shiny cabinet hardware with antiqued faucet and lighting. I love that faucet!!!

I am planning my kichen remodel and spent hours looking at photos on Houzz. On one of my searches I only looked at the kitchen hardware in hundreds of photos.

My final conclusion: anything goes!

Some of the combinations I loved, others I liked, some not so much and others I hated. It really is subjective and you shouldn't decide based on what others here might like or not like.

The metal finish is dependent on the tapestry you apply the finish to and not the other metal finishes in the room.

I read a design blog once that said it's totally ok to mix finishes, but their advice was to make sure that finishes are repeated within the space. So don't have a light fixture that is a finish that is not used anywhere else in the space.

That was just their advice, but I've found it to be pretty helpful. We have ORB hardware on all our doors and kitchen cabinet hardware. But our lights and faucet are brushed nickel.

But also, do what you love!
