Neglected rose garden- what can I cut down now?
Comments (2)Just a few more weeks, and you can go to town. I prune from Thanksgiving through Valentine's Day. My garden in Sonoma County is in the middle of the best fall flush I've had in years, so I couldn't think of pruning those roses that are blooming and holding all their foliage. I do have some roses (the hardier types) that are headed toward dormancy. I could get started on them. You can also get started by removing dead wood. You can also do a little thinning of weak wood, if you're removing entire canes. I have plenty of work I could do on my climbers, for example, removing unproductive wood. But in the end, it's probably a waste of energy to clean up now and prune later. It's more effecient to do is all at once....See MoreCan I take cuttings now?
Comments (1)I did three weeks ago in zone 5. I placed them in a one gallon pot spaced a few inches apart and covered them with a bottomless beverage bottle. I did this early last March with a few I brought back from Florida and they all took. I placed them in a south window and kept the soil moist. They rooted and were ready to move to individual pots in 10 weeks. The warm sunlight plus the humid conditions under the beverage bottle helped them root....See MoreCan I take a cutting now?
Comments (2)- and besides that, you are cutting off the entire season of growth on every branch that you cut. The new leaves come out of the same spot the flowers come out of, once the flowers are done, so you can't avoid cutting off that growth, if you cut the flower stem. If you have lots and lots so losing some growth isn't a big deal, you could try it, but as LizaLily mentioned, they don't last very long anyway. Comments (16)I just rooted over 150 cuttings using the aquarium method. Including Hydrangeas and Crepe Myrtles. Just make sure you paint the aquarium white and put tape around the top edge which was the bottom before spraying. And also a couple strips across the top and spray that also, then remove tape and let paint dry. Mix some peat and perlite 50/50 mix is all that you need to to get it nice and moist. take your cuttings and dip in rooting compound and stick in mix then place aquarium over top of it. Just also make sure it doesn't dry out for you, look for moisture on the window you created by using the tape when you painted the aquarium....See More- 6 years ago
