I usually take cuttings in November and have good success. As long as the leaves are still green and healthy I wouldn't wait until next year - give it a try.

Ebharvey1, you do understand that without location and variety information, your post is useless :-) I can do hardwood cuttings of hardy varieties now, but anything like an HT would die off whether it was rooted or not.

No, I don't understand. Why is my post useless? The OP described a temperature situation similar to mine here in zone 6, and even with frequent overnight freezing temps many of my roses still have green healthy leaves. Why would cuttings from those plants been doomed to die off? That has not been my experience at all.

Just because they are describing a temperature situation you recognize, does not mean they are in zone 6. They could be in zone 4 in a different climate. You don't know, and since you haven't said where you are, they don't know if what you are saying is relevant or not.

Why should cuttings outside survive if the parent plants aren't cane hardy in that climate? If you are rooting the cuttings inside, under lights, you need to say that.

Arent you being a bit hypocritical in your nitpicking of my post? All you said was "wait until next summer", also without knowing the OPs location or if he planned to root then inside or out. So how is your response any more relevant?

cookie8, perhaps you could provide us with your location and plans for propagation. There are ways to propogate dormant cuttings and fall cuttings, but it may have to be done indoors under lights depending where you live.
