Dilemma with my 100 year old cedar shingle siding

I have a 1921 cedar shingle siding historic home that has been covered up with aluminum for the last 60 plus years. I am in the process of finally taking the aluminum siding off and to my surprise, the cedar is in overall good condition, with the exception around the bottom half. The problem is when they installed the siding there are tons of nails popping out of my cedar now. I was planning on cutting the nails down and punching them in. How would I properly secure the holes without water penetration? Should I plan on painting or is there another option here? I also have an addition that was added on and need to figure out what kind of siding to do on that.

my siding guy (who is a fan of plastic) says I should just rip off all the old cedar and start new. With vinyl product. That really isn’t an option because I cannot afford all brand new And I can’t stand plastic stuff, I’m a wood person.

I am in desperate need of suggestions here, please!!

thank you,

Megan
