Comments (105)LOL Brian and Maggy...Maggy...I am not sure. I think it must be nearing 50, but keep in mind that many are young. They will need to remain relatively small, unlike Brian's because I will not be able to get them in my house otherwise ;-). My oldest tree is about 7-8 years old and I've had him 4-5 years. Yes - they are either male or female and most have name tags with their variety and assigned name that my kids give them ;-). I even have one named after Vladimir since it's because of him mentioning the tree that I bought it. I may have to name the gold nugget after Brian......See MoreCredit card took a hit !!! :)
Comments (47)Laura, thank you for thinking of me and trying to message me. I have no idea how to fix that here on Houzz.. :) I have been keeping in touch with Ruth about the Bergamot since last summer. It was supposed to be ready by late summer 2016. Then late fall 2016. Then spring 2017. Then mid- summer 2017.. Then September.. October and now next spring 2018!! Man, that is one slow growing tree! :D I just talked to Ruth again last Thursday and she said it should be ready by the middle of October. I talked to her brother this afternoon and he said it should be ready by the end of October. I have a feeling it will not be ready, like you said, until early spring 2018. It is good that you went ahead and ordered it from FW.. I wonder what rootstock the Bergamot is on and that Harris and FW are using. It sounds like it needs a pretty warm, consistent temperature to get a good growth rate.. I know that they are batting down the hatches in Leu of the hurricane. I am worried for them all also. I told them to stay safe and my prayers are with them. PS: I asked Ruth about the Sugarbelle Tangelo last year after seeing it listed on the back of their brochure. She told me the same thing as you, Laura. Not available yet to the general backyard growers.....See Moretwo more new arrivals. Now I'm done. Really.
Comments (8)Nanzjade, more plants around the corner... We put in this section of patio this spring. My husband said how empty a space it was and we'd never have anything to fill it, I was up for the challenge.... I think I proved him wrong :-) Thanks Mike. Sorry the bupleurifolia seeds are all gone. Hopefully next summer I'll get more. Denise, that variegated minneola is 28" tall, not including the pot. Funny, I had the larger pot in mind for the New Zealand Lemonade, and the smaller one for the Variegated Minneola. Turned out just the opposite. Let's see, I have 2 Shiranui, 2 New Zealand Lemonade, an Australian red lime, a variegated Calamondin, a Meiwa kumquat, a vaniglia sanguigno blood orange, a Fukushu kumquat, and a very sad, very yellow, little Santa Teresa Lemon. I hope I can fit them all back in the greenhouse for the winter. I bought the glazed pots at Ocean State Job Lot, pretty inexpensive. The larger ones (like the one the var. Minneola is in) have two good size drainage holes, and the smaller ones (like the New Zealand Lemonade) have one....See MoreWhat does your ultimate citrus collection looks like?
Comments (35)Best tasting (in my personal opinion, which is very subjective) Mandarins: Satsuma (from a mature tree, takes years to develop full flavor) closely followed by Shasta Gold and Kishu Some people also really love Page (the aroma reminds me of pine needles, not in a bad way) Minneola Tangelos are of course a classic For oranges, Valencia is the one and only (if grown in a warm climate, because in cooler climates it may not develop full flavor and sweetness) Grapefruits: Duncan has "classic grapefruit flavor", the gold standard by which to measure grapefruit flavor (but is a bit seedy, and some people complain of grapefruit bitterness) Oroblanco is sort of like a milder version of Duncan, less bitterness, but a tiny bit less aroma also, still a great one. It's sweet, and even many people who don't care for grapefruits still think Oroblanco is okay....See MoreSammers510
