Home Automation ?

There's not really a forum for this so I'll put it here.

We're trying to figure out what we're going to do from a home automation standpoint. Primary uses will be security & surveillance, HVAC, Lighting, AV, Shades, and remote access for most of these.

We currently have a Control4 system and it has had it's share of bugs (TV's not always turning off, etc.) so won't do it again.

A friend had Honeywell and liked it's user interface and how well it integrated with his security system but had to have it removed due to a long list of reliability problems that they were not able to correct. He's having an RTI system put in.

From what I can tell so far systems tend to fall in to the following categories:

1st Tier: Savant

2nd Tier: Crestron, RTI

3rd Tier: Elan, Loxone

Value: Control4

Net yet ready for prime time: Vivint, Honeywell Total Connect, ADT

It sounds like the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tier systems are all capable and reliable. Savant is more custom configurable than Crestron for instance but both work quite well. Loxone is the best from a user configurability standpoint (E.G., don't have have a tech do anything and everything). C4 is perhaps second on user configurability but not there yet and other problems will keep us away from them.
