Furniture Before & After living room

Long living/family room. Furniture arrangement

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting on Houzz. Im hoping to get some advice on furniture arrangement though I should probably start off with getting advice on my wood floors first. I am attaching photos. I have one wall which is the wall for the staircase and one half a wall which separates the kitchen from the room. Im used to having a traditional family and living room but it was my lovely husband's idea to combine the two and now I feel kind of stuck!

There are also a lot of windows. The TV will be placed on top of the fireplace which is the focal point. I am thinking of dividing the room into two- three sections. I still want the room to feel cozy. Please advise.

I would have your dining area right off the kitchen (which you probably plan on) and use a side board or buffet table between that area and the family/TV area to create a separation of space. Or you could put a sofa or a couple of chairs between the two spaces. The front is a bit more challenging. You may need to just put in a few chairs and make it a reading nook or small conversation area. Good luck.

I can see 3 spaces you could do nicely. 1) a dining area right off the kitchen half-wall 2) with the tv over the fireplace, you'll need seating opposite. You could have a loveseat and side chairs facing that focal point. They probably would need to be flush against the wall instead of leaving a walkway behind them, unless the room is wider than it looks like. 3) In the front corner, you could have an l-shaped seating arrangement for a conversation corner, or a home office/workspace, or a piano. You wouldn't be able to see the tv from here at all.

How about moving the couch over to the wall on the right looking at the photo, then move your table and chairs to go in the opposite direction meaning turn them so the length is opposite what it is now. Place the table from the right wall in front of the window. At least it would give you a view of the fireplace. If you could post a photo from inside the living room looking out of the room it would give a better sense of how the room looks.

How much seating do you need on a regular basis? I would be inclined to get a leather couch, that would sit to the left of the fireplace, facing the dining area. Sofa table behind the couch, with lamps. Nesting tables at the fireplace end, to be used as needed. Opposite, on the right side of the fireplace, a pair of chairs that recline. No ottomans, as I see that being an obstacle for your son. The recliners let you put your feet up as desired, but are not in the way the rest of the time. A nice table and lamp between the two chairs. No coffeetable needed. The tv moves to the stairway wall, where the couch is now. Wall mounted or on an entertainment stand. If there is room for the bookcase beside it, fine, but I have a feeling that wonÃ¢ÂÂt work, in part because I believe I see the thermostat there. In that case, you could put another chair against the wall for extra seating. with a wall-mounted swing arm lamp beside it, and a narrow table next to it. I wouldnÃ¢ÂÂt necessarily drywall in the space over the fireplace - it could be a cool display niche, especially if you could add some lighting into the top of it.

One idea might be to add a very short wall on the left as you enter the living room so the opening to the living room is the same width as the entry ... and, by doing that you could put wall to wall built ins on that end of the living area, with or without a tv, and still create two separate sitting areas. I don't understand the "bar" against the solid wall behind the pantry and refrigerator. If you changed the pantry to a "butler's pantry" with a pass thru window, that would have made more sense. Is your "bar" a cabinet something built in? Have you considered either closing or narrowing the door between dining and living room and/or creating your pass thru bar there with your piano in the adjoining corner adjacent to the fireplace near the dining room wall? https://www.decorpad.com/search/butler-pantry-pass-through

Will there be a TV in the room? If so decide where it will go first, then layout the furniture. Best not over FP. If you place TV to the left of the FP then you can float a sofa front of it and place a couple of chairs in front of the 3 windows

Thank you! So I actually have a kitchen dining area on the other side of the half wall and a full dining room on the other side of the foyer or I definitely would have placed a dining area in this room.

Oh fantastic! Then you could make that corner, by the half wall another conversation spot. If you have kids, it could be a great homework/hangout/play spot for little ones while you work in the kitchen. Or, if you like boardgames, a game table and comfy chairs/poufs.
