I've not read any of them, but one of my TBR list is Death of an Avid Reader. I mean, how could I NOT buy that when I saw it in the bookshop?

I have read a few of them. I enjoy them, but I like Maisie better.

Carolyn, *sigh*, I know what you mean. Maisie ruins us for all other books of that kind . There is another Maisie book coming out in 2018 . Yaaay.

Read Dying In the Wool this month, the first of the series. I too loved the Maisie Dobbs series. Kate Shackleton was portrayed as a well-to-do, competitive young woman. IMO. I'm willing to try a later one in the series. Hoping she becomes a more caring human being. On the positive side there was solid information on the production of cloth (wool) in those days.

Well darn, Martin! Death of an Avid Reader is such a good title. I hate it when a brilliantly titled book (and there aren't that many of them) disappoints.

I just bought the book and haven't read it yet. Is it anywhere near as horrible as the Rys Bowen "mysteries " ?

I was intrigued by that title, too. I'm disappointed to find out it's disappointing! I love the Maisie series, and especially like to listen to the audio books.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something similar to Maisie Dobbs? It is categorized as a cozy mystery, but when I look under that label I get a lot of books with a predictable plot and recipes or craft tips at the end. OK for a very light read but not at all like the Maisie series.

there is only one Maisie Dobbs........unfortunately.

All others are weak copies.

Katmarie, have you tried The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith? They take place in Botswana and have great characters. The Flavia De Luce books by Alan Bradley I also find entertaining.

kat, have you read the Charles Todd books? This is a mother and son writing team, and there are two series. One is a post-WWI detective who has some shell shock going on as he resumes his civilian duties, and the other is an English nurse in France. I like the detective books best, but I think the most recent nurse book is the best yet of that series.

I've been making the library my first stop for books lately. I noticed that the number of new books and magazines are diminishing, so I am supporting all I can.

katmarie, you might want to check on stopyourekillingme.com to get the Todd books in sequence. They do build on each other. The first Ian Rutledge is A Test of Wills, and the first Bess Crawford is A Duty to the Dead.

I have begun another Kate Shackleton, Murder on a Summer's Day by Frances Brody. True, she is no Maisie Dobbs.

I finished both A Test of Wills and A Duty to the Dead. I am looking forward to reading more. Carolyn_ky, thank you for recommending reading them in sequence.
