Bathrooms Other Design Dilemma

What is this backsplash and how do I get rid of it?

I recently moved into a home where in one of the bathrooms there is this ugly textured backsplash. It’s not tile and I don’t know what this is. It is like a thick textured wallpaper. I want to remove it but I feel like in order to remove it I should know what it is. Is there anyone who has any advice on what this is and how to remove it?

That looks like the vinyl/plastic sheet stuff often seen in public restrooms. I don't know what type of adhesive is used. I'm sure you'll find something nicer to put up. :)

Looks like FRP panel that was cut down, and depends on how the did it, some roll glue over the entire surface, and glue it up, maybe you get lucky and they used a few dabs of caulk and it will come right off with a scraper.

Most likely you will have minimal wall damage, just apply a few skim coats of spackle over it and get it ready for paint or whatever you plan on doing there.

Bullnose - also for any outside corners! I have an outside corner on my backsplash - there's a concrete post in the corner that we had to tile around. I totally forgot about it when I was ordering tile (which is funny, because I was obsessed about my outside corners in the bathroom). Well, the tiler asks what I want to do with the corner... he's got these vinyl strips he likes to use for corners. I had already nixed the vinyl strips in the bathroom - I think they look cheesy. I asked if he could miter the corners (cut the edge of the tile in a diagonal so the two corners line up). Well, the corner is exactly the same size as the tile so there isn't enough overlap to miter them. Fortunately, they were rectified porcelain tiles with a nice factory edge, so he was able to just line up the edges. Doesn't look bad. Sorry for the long story, but the upshot is - don't forget the bullnose! ;-)

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

How do you get spots off of a matte black porcelain backsplash?

It sounds like the grout wasn't washed off well during installation. Be careful because you could damage the porcelain trying to get this off. I would consult with a tile specialist. You'll likely need some special cleaning agent.
