Which backsplash do you prefer?
Comments (10)The problem with asking us to choose a backsplash color based on a photo is everyone's monitor shows color differently. Plus how you photographed it can change the color too. For example you took the picture at night under artificial light. During the daylight using only natural light the colors will look different. That is why only you can choose the color that works best. Oh and please don't take this wrong, but as an artist it's a bugaboo of mine. Comments (20)The diagonal floor tiles and the ornate diagonal in the backsplash bother me ... if both were straight or both curvy I'd be OK with it. With a small kitchen, if you have a prominent backsplash or other feature, it will look closer and make your kitchen feel smaller....See MoreWhich Backsplash?
Comments (17)You're right. They are dark compared to my splash behind the stove. It's important that it goes well with that piece that's already there. I love the tiles in your pics mark-rachel. I'm not concerned about the budget since its such a small space and it wont break the bank if i go for expensive tile. Comments (30)If you find a backsplash tile the same color as your paint and use a matching grout the same color as the tile or a bit lighter you won't notice where the backsplash ends. You have so much going on in that gorgeous granite that you don't want contrast with the grout. I don't care for the backsplash ending under the hood if the paint above is a different color. Matching tile to the paint will also help hide where the backsplash ends at the end of the run, as the wall extends past the cabinets. You have no real stopping point for the tile there either. I assume you don't want to repaint, so matching the tile to paint will mask where things end and look much better....See More

6 years agoWood cabinets with grain, tone variations and / or knots have "movement". Your countertop choice looks like it will also have movement, and also your floor. That is too much movement even if all the surfaces are individually lovely. There is no place for the eye to rest. Add to that the stuff of life that is often on the kitchen counters, and the look becomes too busy. The small mosaic tile backsplash are the most frequently removed splash after being installed - what looks pretty in a 12 x 12 sheet can be overwhelming and optically difficult. Your choices are more understated than most, but still I think you would be better off for the overall look of your kitchen to go with something simple.
Also, do not pick your backsplash until your countertop is installed. Then you will start to have the big picture of ow the surfaces are coming together. I was originally going to go with white subway tiles because they looked great with the counter, but once installed I realized white would be too stark next to my wood cabinets and went with cream. Other wood cabinets have a wood tone that works better with white.

I almost used a stone like this but it did not look right with my counter:
This small tile backsplash works with the wood because it is very understated - little color variation and warm in tone. You need to see the enlarged picture to get a good look:
The cabinet tone here looks good with the white - which lets the countertop and rich wood be the stars:
Larger tiles and contrasting grout can liven a plain backsplash - but be careful not to get too busy or too much a contrast with wood cabinets. When the tile is installed, but before it is grouted, there will be the illusion of a contrasting grout - a good way to assess how that would look in your space:

6 years agoBy understated I mean the colors in the various tiles are similar like in the second picture I posted above.
This backsplash is not understated - lots of variation, and to be honest, I would get a headache after a while from all the optical movement.
I have a friend with wood cabinets like mine. She was going to do her backsplash in a mosaic which was very pretty, but in my opinion would have been too busy and dark for her kitchen. I happened to find a picture of a similar kitchen with a similar mosaic and I showed it to her. It totally changed her mind to see the mosaic all over the entire backsplash. She is going to use it behind her stove, but that is all, and I think it will look fine for her in a small area.Also, as Porter mentioned above, these tiles are not being as used as much in newer designs.
This one is a little better, but I feel the wood gets lost in the backsplash. it is ok because the counter and floor are monochromatic / plain:
Show your family some pics with mosaic vs. simpler tile. Maybe when they see it, they will agree with you. Do a google image search of "wood cabinets mosaic tile backsplash".
What NOT to do - too much patterns, dark outlets, did not remove 4" splash, caulk is white and does not match gray grout:

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI don't mind the bar backsplash tiles IF they're in the right format. the ones you've chosen are already a bit dated. If you like the crackle, try these newer ones in a herringbone (4 diff color choices on these)

this countertop is similar to yours. these random bars actually look nice, a grayish/green.
these are a longer subway in more of a iridescent. comes in a gray as well.
I can't tell what tone your countertop is, if it's warm or cool. but these Athens Gray type chevrons look like it would work.
