Comments (11)I am with you both....... I have never vaccinated chickens, ducks, turkeys, pheasant..and I have them all......and they all free range in the same acreage.... I do however, vaccinate my goats, sheep , cow and horse selectively based on the fact that they never leave the farm so can only be exposed to things brought in by other animals or insects....but it seems that last year, at first sign of below freezing temps, I lost a chicken every two weeks or so from some respiratory looking thing..... I studied up on what I could do for treatment and this year, I have had good luck knocking it out of the two that appeared to have it so far....but I have still lost three with no appearance of illness, just found dead in the morning in the coop.......no sign of predator or injury.....just dead..... I try with all my might to keep all my pets as natural as possible...... everyone gets to free range... every one has somewhere to be closed up at night away from predators.... everyone gets natural probiotics and wormers, except once a year and I do my own fecal floats and only treat if there is an infestation...... so I understand not having any input and I understand wanting to keep it all natural, but with 80+ chickens that I love like kids, I want them to have whatever will keep them healthy and happy.... so anyone else have any real input? Comments (36)I think the vaccination is a good idea. "Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year." Yes, the condom idea sounds great, but what happens when a woman decides to get pregnant and her husband carries HPV? He probably won't have any symptoms, so he wouldn't know. Now the woman who has been so careful has HPV and an increased risk of cancer. The virus could also affect the babies vocal cords during the delivery....See MoreVaccinations question
Comments (4)Thanks, ladybugfruit. Since I posted, I've been researching and reading a LOT about this. Coco had his last vaccines when he was 25 weeks old. I read that if a cat had his last kitten shots when he was a minimum of 16 weeks of age, then he should be protected (for years or for life--depending on what study you read). All those "kitten series" of vaccines? I read that they're done that way in hopes that one of them "takes"--which would be after the antibodies the kitten gets from his mother have decreased to a low enough level that his own immune system can respond and make its own antibodies. And I think I'll have the breeder hold up on the new kitten's vaccines, and I'll do them---1 time---at the right age for them to work the first time. It's amazing what we take for granted---we've been indoctrinated to think that we're being responsible pet owners by taking our pets in for their yearly shots when in fact, we may be doing more harm than good by this over-vaccination. We don't get yearly vaccines--why would pets' immune systems be any different???...See MoreVaccinated visiting w/ non-vaccinated?
Comments (29)My daughter who is fully vaccinated will be visiting next week and although we made the decision before the CDC guidelines were released, they actually dovetail quite closely with what we'd planned. Since my husband has also had his shots 2/3 of us are fully vaccinated and the third person-me-is not in a high risk category. So we will forego masks in the house and I told her she doesn't need to take a COVID test before boarding her plane. My husband will pick her up at the airport after a direct flight from DC to Miami; they will come to our house where she will take off the clothes she wore traveling and shower down there, then come upstairs to our area, which is where the guest room is located. Her travel clothes can be washed downstairs so they never have to come anywhere near me. Which is probably overkill but why not? We feel comfortable with those plans. While I understand and don't disagree with the CDC advocating caution I do feel there is somewhat of a risk that by not promulgating ANY benefits of getting vaccinated, they aren't doing much to encourage people to do so. Frankly if after being vaccinated you still are told you might/probably can spread it, that you can't stop wearing masks with your family inside, etc....lots of people who are assiduously sheltering in place and staying away from others may figure why bother. My theory is that in the interests of not encouraging recklessness, the CDC is erring a bit too far on the cautious side. I'll put on my amateur immunologist hat and say I seriously doubt vaccinated people can spread the disease--there doesn't seem to be creditable data showing that to be the case. Suspect at some point that will be the scientific conclusion too. OTOH after I'm vaccinated I will not stop wearing my mask when I go outside and following other safety recommendations on distancing etc until scientific concensus indicates it is safe to do so. Luckily my age group is eligible beginning next Monday so I hope to test this plan very soon :)...See MoreAnnegriet
