Where is the line between being patient and being a doormat?

My husband and I try to be understanding and reasonable people. Sometimes the unexpected happens, especially when remodeling.

This is our third home improvement project with this company.

The first was the update of two bathrooms; one completely down to the studs.

The seconds was our kitchen - everything new, including the removal of walls. Nothing was left untouched in our 1970s kitchen.

Minor issues were taken care of in a timely manner to our satisfaction.

In February 2017, we attended a Home Show to find a company to build us a new covered deck, retaining wall, and concrete patio.

We didn't consider our former contractor because (during our kitchen remodel) the owner told us he was going to concentrate on interiors and no longer contract on outdoor projects.

During the Home Show, we stopped by his booth to chat. He enthusiastically told us to contact him because he be happy to take on our project.

During March and April, plans were tweaked and finalised. The contract was signed on May 21, 2017.

"Have your tree guy cut down the trees, we will start in about a month" he said.

"Once we start framing, we will be done in two weeks" he said.

It is now November, and we are probably 2/3 finished.

So much has gone wrong, including:

** "Forgot" to get permits, so the city issued a stop work notice.

** The back hoe cut our phone line. The phone company isn't laying new lines until next spring. We have to live with intermittent internet service because they can only give us a temporary chemical patch until then.

** Had to remove and re-lay the concrete patio because it was poured incorrectly. Water was pooling.

** Workers show up unexpectedly about every two weeks - there is NO communication.

We feel as though we are not a priority, and wish we had never started this project.

It has been 5 1/2 months since we signed the contract and have paid the contractor 3/4 of the bill at this point.

My question is...are we being unreasonable thinking that a project like this should have been completed by now?

What do you suggest we do?

Friends and co-workers are telling us that we need to demand reimbursement for all of the problems, but we aren't sure what to do at this point.
