I could certainly see a table there, tho not in front of the fireplace itself. Judging by the room you are showing us, once you add a buffet or console behind the couch, you are almost in front of the fireplace already. So I am assuming that you mean by the window. I don't know how old your kids are, or what their habits are, but I know my kids have always preferred to do their homework in their rooms - and I have encouraged that. Less distractions from the normal house noises and activities. And when they have an hour or two of homework every night, that means a long time that no one else can use the family space. So I guess what I am saying is be sure before you put in a large table that it will be used in the way you expect, and as much as you expect. Otherwise, I would be more inclined to put in a drop-leaf table against the back of the couch, with a chair set on each side, which could be opened for use when needed. You could then have a comfy seating area by the window with a couple of chairs and an ottoman, which could still be used by the kids for reading, or chatting with you in the kitchen while they have a snack, etc. I am wondering if you could leave your couch where it is, and put one chair on either side, rather than both under the window? Then you could move the couch in a bit if needed, to make more room for the fireplace/sitting end. Your room is the same size as our family room. We have about 2/3 of the room used for seating, tv watching, etc. - the domain of the three males in my house. The other end, which is tucked away a bit, is my craft area, and now also has excercise equipment. Our goal needs to be that the exercise equipment gets as much use as the TV! LOL

Wow. love your fireplace stone. The more we see of your home, the more I love it. Are you happy with the natural light in your kitchen? If so, I would be tempted to close up the undersized pass through and use the space for some interesting art. I don't love seeing the kitchen from the dining room, and it looks like just a few steps around the wall with the tiny passthrough. How much do you love the drum over the existing table? Your choice, or was it there when you bought the home. I only ask because I think it's oversized for the existing table. And, if you love it, I would look for a different table, with a larger prescence and different shape.

I would use the side of the room where you currently have your sofas as the "adult" space, and the corner where you have the play rug as the "kids" space. You need to separate the two. So move the desk to the adult area - either on wall to the right side of the opening to the family room, or slide the sofa under the window closer to the other one and put the desk on the wall between the sofa and entry. Move the two tall storage units to the staircase wall, and use them exclusively for toy and game storage. The kids kitchen can go on the wall to the left of the doorway opening. From your entry, you will see mostly the adult area, and the messier toys and all the shelves won't be immediately visible. One other option that could work depending on your floor plan is combining your living room and dining room in this space, and using the dining room exclusively as a playroom.

Kid toys are so hard. My kids are elementary-aged now but I remember those years of large plastic toys! Is there space in the kids' rooms for toy storage? I think it's good for mental health to be able to have a clean adult space at the end of the day. Could they keep toys in their rooms and bring them into the family room to play? If not, one trick that's worked for us is large baskets. We have some in the playroom that are labeled so kids can help clean up. But I also have a big lidded one in the living room for me to toss random toys that get left out. If this room needs to stay playroom and family room, you might take down all the small things on your glass shelves and put square woven baskets on it for toys. Or swap out those shelves for a large dresser with drawers. You could make the tent half of the room the playroom and the sofa half the family room; keep all toy storage on the tent side. I would get a large rug to layer over your carpet to define the sofa/TV area. Is that a chest beside your sofa? Can toys go in there? But in general, closed storage is your friend right now. Not toy-related, but I would take down those small things above your window. You could hang one large curtain rod over each set of windows and have some nice curtains there. Pull your sofa out from the wall a bit so there's space for curtains to hang behind it. Replacing your blinds with a natural material shade would up the style also. Good luck! As long as it may seem, this stage doesn't last forever. Pretty soon they'll be into sports activities and ipads and you'll have crazy cords and sports equipment all over your house!
