MCM modern remodel update
Comments (26)thanks, everyone. We feel incredibly blessed to have found this little spot and to be able to raise our family here. We haven't even moved in yet, but it is already a special place and can't wait to make some great memories here. It's unbelievable to us that had we not bought it, this house would have been torn down to make way for one of the oversized, generic Mediterranean style villas that are popping up everywhere out here. msrose and sail-away, the flooring is tile imported from Italy. I was not totally sold on the wood look tile until I went to Porcelanosa's showroom in Anaheim. We narrowed it down to two manufacturers -- Porcelanosa and the Italian one (whose name I am forgetting right now) and chose the Italian one because it was a better match with the brick/stone in the house. The tiles are large (48 in long) and the install went surprisingly well given the size of the tiles -- I had heard stories of bad lippage and poor installation, but we are happy with the result. sjhockeyfan, chispa is right, it's the Pacific as viewed from the peninsula south of Los Angeles. Locals call this view the "Queens Necklace" which looks over the Santa Monica Bay (including, among other things, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach) and looks into downtown LA and the Hollywood Hills in the distance. The back of the house faces Malibu (the landmass in the distance), and the side of the house faces due west/Catalina Island. "> Thanks to you all for your input and suggestions on paint and flooring choices. I'm sure I will be coming back with questions about furnishings, décor, etc. We sold 95% of our furniture with our old house and we're pretty much starting from scratch, so I could use some input! This is our first modern home (coming from a cottage/ranch, a Victorian and then a Craftsman before that), so it's also a design paradigm shift for us. x-posted with gooster, dang, I wish I had known before! I would have saved them for you...I just sold those dining chairs on Craigslist last weekend. Comments (2)Enjoying your very nice home, but not really seeing the reference to Craftsman-transitional. Are you talking about the outside appearance of the home? The pictures are kind of piece-y, so it is hard to tell how the spaces all come together. The white leather couch by the bar stools seems a bit out of place, but the rest all seems to work together. There are some details I might tweak, like the too-small piece of art over the buffet in the dining area, but nothing else. As for window treatments, silk can fold nicely, but is very susceptible to sun damage, so to do shades from silk would mean a sun-protection lining, and that might affect the folding of the shades. Consider a faux silk instead. I would do the sheers under the drapery in the same color as the roman shades, not in the rust. For the window where you don't want the view, consider window wallpaper in a frosted or design of some kind, that will allow light but block the view....See MoreChandelier options for MCM-ish/modern/post and beam - pls help choose
Comments (61)thanks, cawaps. And you're right - I just re-read the thread and it did get a few votes! Deciding on a chandelier took so long and I appreciate all the feedback and thoughts I got here. Annie Deighnaugh ...Would you mind sharing how you are lighting that soffitt? Not sure if you are still looking for cove lighting, but we used Alloy Led tape lights that are housed in a light diffusing track. We looked at a lot of options, and this seemed to be the best and most affordable option. It wasn't inexpensive, but some of the cove lights our designer and architect recommended were quite expensive, and we needed a lot of lighting as the light soffitt runs all through the house. We also used them as under counter lights. There are some options that changed colors, but decided to go with just the warm white....See Moredining room update help, please
Comments (4)Hi Cheryl, You have a lovely kitchen and dining area! It's good to hear that you get plenty of use out of it, too. If I'm catching the pictures correctly, I think the two art pieces with blue would be one or the other on the wall and the grays with black stripe with be hung as a set. Let me know if I'm mis-interpreting. To me, the art piece on the left with blues would be interesting with your chandelier. You've got some other blues going on in the kitchen and the sitting area as well. It would be nice if it were bigger for the wall - maybe mounted on a bigger panel behind it? (Barn board or something like that?) Which art piece are you leaning towards? Hope some of that helps, Doug...See MoreRelated Professionals
