Comments (12)Regarding your original question, I think white cabinets and dark countertops would be great. I did this in the last place we lived - the kitchen was a different shape but also quite small. I have photos of it somewhere - I think on 3.5 disks - I will see if I can find the external drive and post them. Personally I love the look of white cabinets and black counter tops (since you don't have kids you can even go with painted). I agree with bmorepanic about the pocket door - we are putting some in and it will really make the space seem less cramped. And with michellemarie about putting a 24" depth cabinet above the fridge. You could store cooling racks, cookie sheets, etc. above the fridge. Or you can put a pull-out tray in there and just pull it out so you can access the whole space. Your garage is off your kitchen - are you able to use it for storage? My mom lives in CA and uses an extra fridge and tall cabinet (Ikea I think) for extra food storage (Costco etc.) and it works great. Can you remove the soffit above the upper cabinets to gain some additional upper cabinet space? Depending on how much space you need under your sink (will depend on how deep your sink will be, do you have a garbage disposal) you can do an inverted sink base. This is where you have a drawer on the bottom and all cabinet on the top (no pull out shelf)....See Moretupperware storage
Comments (19)I have what seems to be way too many plastics, and since my move, I've been good about only keeping 1 lid for each bottom, but it's still overwhelming! I was planning on buying the rubbermaid set that saharag spoke of but decided the containers were too small or not the right shape for me. I do like the look of the rubbermaid premier containers that raehelen links to. Do they all take the same lid? Unfortunately I need to keep disposables on hand for leftovers that go home with my kids. I also freeze big batches of tomato sauce, soups and other things, so I need a supply of decent quality stacking ones. For most of these I use chinese soup containers. As I write the above list, I see why I can't keep my plastics drawer neat--there's just too d*** many but I need them all! I think I should try to only keep the ones I use frequently and for DH to take for work lunches. I can try to find a home for the rest elsewhere....See MorePlease help with kitchen remodel Dos and Don'ts
Comments (18)I agree with the idea of hiring a good professional. Unfortunately, there are many kitchen designers that are bad and do not deserve to use that title. If you go by the many designs given by KDs that are uploaded to ask for advice, I am not sure how they can justify their work... They simply look awful and are functionally terrible. Personally, I think the OP would do better here if she/he puts the designs on this site and work with many very talented people here. I have a great deal of respect for the folks that are giving their time for free. I have been coming to this site off and on for 15 years. This is an amazing site. I agree with specific storage but you also need to have generic storage. Your life changes as life changes. For example, drawers ALL need to be deep enough and wide enough to be useful for generic things. You need to balance your immediate needs with future needs. For example, if you design with a dog feeding area or dog kennel (I have seen these pictures), it will probably not do well when you sell the house. This is a wasted space for the next owner. You can never have enough counter space; but they have to be useful. My cousins' McMansion has a huge kitchen with cabinets brought to the counter top. They look nice. The cabinets frame the range and hood. However, there is not enough useful countertop next to the range in that monster sized kitchen. My mother's kitchen and dining room was not wide enough to have a table and stool for the peninsula; yet, they made an overhang with stools. I know many people with dysfunctional kitchen. In my SIL's, you can't open the frig when people are sitting at the island. Again, the kitchen looks lovely. Kitchen design is hard because you want it to look nice and also be functional. When visiting friends, look at their kitchens with critical eye and see why it works or why it does not work. Ask your family and friends what they like about their kitchen and what they don't. This will help you figure out what you can have and what is not feasible. Yes, you can have a 48 inch peninsula top as long as there is enough room behind it to be useful. Can you fit your table and chairs around that room without bumping into the furniture....See Morejaviwa
