Opinions on my Eureka Semi-Dwarf.

Hello every buddy..I have a Eureka Lemon Semi-Dwarf that i recently obtained from a good friend of mine. I have never grown anything other than cannabis of which I have 10 years experience doing so. As for growing absoultely anything else, I don't have the slightest clue as to what I am doing. I assume the plant os about 3-4 years old but I have no actual clue. I am mainly looking for opinions of preferably experienced growers as to howc they think my teee looks..i have attached pictures and would love any feedback/advice anyone may have to offer.. The tree is in a 3.5 gal and I will be transplanting it into a 15 at the start of the new year. I feel 15 is enough space for a plant to thrive with out being too big or too heavy or losing mobility.. I've been giving it Grow Big 6-4-4 by Fox Farm once a week and sometimes in combination with Fish Poop 5-1-1. Pruning advice would be nice as well. I've made a few cuts already but would like to know weather or not placement and position of the cut made makes any difference whatsoever. I've put allot of care into this tree and o how that it shows..I would like a Kumquat tree next.

Putting it into a 15 gal pot is asking for trouble (death by root rot) unless you have a very well draining soil mix and know what you are doing. Go to a 5 gal pot instead. Use Foliage Pro 9-3-6 fertilizer because it has all micronutrients. Fish poop will not be necessary if you use FP 9-3-6. . Pruning will give you fewer fruit because fruit form at the ends of branches.

Hello RJ, welcome to the forum. Nice looking Eureka lemon tree. I noticed there is a tag on the side of the pot with a bar code, can you post a close up pic of that? It should say the type of root stock your tree is on. Most container folks here plant their trees in either a variation of 5-1-1 mix, which is a home made fast draining mix that you can do search for the recipe here on the forum. Another growing medium some folks use is a gritty mix which is a soil less type of mix and somewhat like hydroponics as you will almost have to water it daily in a warm dry climate during hotter months of the year. As Vladimir stated above foliage pro is used as a good all around fertilizer to help with sustaining good growth and flowering in the spring. As for pruning your tree, not much pruning is needed unless you get some aggressive growth that you want to trim back or keep your tree to a certain shape. What area of the world do you live in? The store tag looks like the tree came from Lowes and you stated it’s a semi Dwarf so I’m going to take a guess that your tree is on C35 root stock. What is your grow zone?

I used to live in Tennessee and tried growing them there and didn't have any luck. I moved back to Indiana in 04 and live in the northern part of the sate. Have had some limited success here as they seem to like the cooler climates better. I do go to Eau Claire, MI every year to pick them, both the sweets and sours. the big thing I have found out about growing cherries is they seem to be more prone to diseases, pests, and weather. So far I have had only one year and that was last year (2013) that I got a small crop of cherries from my trees. My sour cherries (North Star and Montmorency) seem to be a little more hardy than the sweets (2 Rainer, Lapins, and a Windsor). Just my opinion and would like to see what others have to say about your post! This year with the harsh hard winter I didn't get any blooms, and then in their weakened state the aphids hit my sweet cherry trees and done some damage.

Thanks citrange, Did some reading and inspecting. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to check the underside of the leaves (even with the limited gardening I've done in my life, that's something I should have thought of). I think you may be right about the leaf miners. I've included a photo of the underside of a leaf I removed from the tree. There is an obvious trail, and the leaf surface around that area is shiny. Can anyone confirm leaf miner activity from this photo? Also, how long does it typically take for new growth to change from light green to the darker green of more mature leaves? The first flush of growth on my tree seemed to take about a month; is this what I can expect? I'm asking because I want to make sure I don't miss a sign of nutrient deficiency. I know I'm asking a bunch of questions in this post! Can I ask one more? :-) Is the roots growing out of the bottom of the pot a sign that the tree needs to be potted up? I know from my reading that citrus likes to be somewhat rootbound and potting up should be done gradually. This tree hasn't been in the pot but three months; I'm thinking it's too soon to pot up, but those roots have me worried! Thanks! Michelle

I was at a local four winds yesterday and found no stock of any true dwarf eureka. I saw a buddha's hand true dwarf at OSH and that was as close as I found. I'll call four winds tomorrow to see if they can order one for me. Just found this remark on four wind's site. Not sure what they mean by that but doesn't look promising. Citrus trees purchased through our mail order website are all grafted on dwarf rootstocks that are perfect for container growing. If planted in the ground dwarf trees can be expected to reach “Semi-Dwarf” size – up to around 16 feet in height, depending upon variety. In a pot, the dwarf trees will stay much smaller, especially with judicious pruning. Standard size citrus trees, available at California nurseries, are best suited for growing in the ground and can be expected to get much taller – up to 25 feet, depending on variety. Be sure to provide more space in the ground for standard size trees. Generally, a Dwarf tree needs an 8-10 foot diameter space, while a Standard tree should be provided with a larger growing space – up to 15 feet in diameter.

I have one of these and have learned that these are very prolific growers. After you allow it to attain the height you want, you will have to address the size of rootball at some point. Even though you trim the top, the roots will keep on growing. The roots will have to be pruned after every few years to fit the maximum size pot you wish to use. I topped mine this past fall at 4' and just pinch back the new growth at the cut. My current pot is a 14" and the tree will eventually be put into a 20" pot which is the maximum size for me. My tree is grafted onto a semi dwarf rootstock while yours is on it's own roots. You will have to root prune more often than I. Root pruning will probably have to be done about every 2 years.

I live in Dana Point Southern California 1hr30 South of LA 1hr30 north of SD...it is summer all year round here. Not sure which zone that is
