Comments (8)LOL I love it, Marly! You never cease to amaze. I suspect this would sell well in bedroom communities outside of big cities where Type-A people turn to gardening to relieve stress. They're the ones that would appreciate both a systematic approach to planting and your artistry. Also, they wouldn't mind paying a bit to get started. peak...See MoreGoing to Seed - Collecting Seeds
Comments (11)Do NOT cut off the coriander if you want seeds. It will not return or get bushy if the tops are removed. If you planted some new seeds at the base of mature growing plants, harvest the wide leaves of the new planting as cilantro. The tall coriander plants can reach 3 feet or more in height and you will usually see seeds forming very soon after they flower. Wait for the seeds to turn tan color The same holds true with dill and its 3+ foot or more in height, and the seeds are green and swelled up just after they flower. Tiny wasps and bees love to pollinate these too, which helps in seed production. PLEASE BE MORE PATIENT. Unless you live in Zone 2 or 3 or in an extremely short growing season, you have about 2-3 more months of growing time. I have never seen a pickle plant? Pickling cucumbers yes, but growing a pickle on a plant seems a bit unusual. My mammouth dill grew to over 5 foot tall and was really huge when it came up in my asparagus patch where there is always plenty of natural nitrogen. If I were to grow pickling cukes this year, they would have been producing about the same time as the dill was forming seeds. My dill wasn't planted by me, as it was from seeds that had fallen from last summers plants. They do survive our winters, and even corn gluten applications, which usually prevent most things from germination. While I mention corn gluten, I must say that Periwinkle (Vinca) a purple flowering ground cover vining plant does NOT like corn gluten, as it had killed some of mine a month after applying the corn gluten. Because I get a lot of weeds showing up in the periwinkle patch, I thought that the gluten would control them, but it went overboard, and attacked the good plants too....See MoreReady To Go
Comments (4)I'll answer as best I can. Keep in mind, I haven't grown lettuce so take my answer as you will. 1)My instinct says 3/4" should be enough. if you want to go with 1.1/2", 1" into the reservior will be plenty. vermiculite is a notorious wick. 2)I think either way will probably work. Personally I'd give them a rinse as dirt is more likely to harbor molds and what not than perlite/vermiculite. 3)The air pump in a raft system should be left on 24/7 4)In my experience, I have less bugs than planting in the soil. Less quantity that is. I've actually seen a larger variety of bugs. my first and only experience with horn worms was last year on the tomatoes. Also remember that since you're growing on an elevated surface, it's easier to spot and destroy anything that may get on them....See MoreMango Tree From Seed....
Comments (29)This is my new baby. It sprouted to life from the seed of a"Bombay" mango that grows in my neighborhood. The fruit was a lovely combination of sweet with a deep rich spicy note and full mango flavor. The Bombay has a rich heritage of being brought to Jamaica as a seed from a favorite Indian cultivar. It is the parent to many successful cultivars such as "Bailey's Marvel" and "Zill." It came up completely on it's own from the seed I discarded one cool, rainy night. I'm anxious to see how it turns out. I have another seed grown fruit from 2008. We will see what that turns out to be like. All the fun is in the anticipation! I'm sure I'll still be spending time on the GW Forum when they eventually do fruit or maybe the future owner of the home and garden will mention the crazy exotic garden long after I'm gone. All the best! Vince...See MoreTony Doe(Miami, Florida 10b)
