Just as a little device to keep planning, and advice, on track, I would consider what the name of this room should be, at least for the purpose of posting, so that it reflects the needs it fulfills for my family. Will you really migrate in there to enjoy the morning sunshine, say, watch spring unfold outside, and actually spend most of your family time in another, more important room that's better in the evenings and when the weather outside isn't that appealing? Your decor so far is very attractive but suggests something else. Is it your casual living room, or family room, kids' room, or whatever? (Or is this just a very large house?) Call it a sunroom, a term with well-established associations, and more than one person will end up suggesting you paint everything white or green, buy wicker furniture and for heavens' sake turn it to face the garden, replace the rug with sisal, and hang bamboo on the windows. On the plus side, tile is still considered appropriate in "sunrooms" that open to gardens. :)

Vintage orange floors here too! What worked for me was to just let it be what it was - using the right greens/blue greens seem to make the floor read more like a reddish brown which is a lot more palatable than orangie orange.. I second the advice to avoid dark expresso stains on the floor - not only does it show dust and dirt but like anything itll look dated in time and then what. When I redid my floors (the aforementioned vintage fir with its orange tendencies) I was advised to use a deep tone sealer (not a stain) to tame the orange tendencies and give it a beautiful tone. Also what I learned - very often its the OLD POLYURETHANE on the floor that's yellowed and taken on that sickly dingy color - not the wood itself! Which means taking that off, and putting on a clear non yellowing waterbase finish with or without the deeptone sealer could look FABULOUS. - the place I went to had all kinds of wood samples with different finishes I could take home and look at Now, are these old growth vintage wood floors? If so that's another reason to not stain - by totally obscuring the grain with heavy pigmented stain, you may be missing the opportunity to have some TRULY drop dead STUNNING floors. Cant really make out the grain/color too clearly from here, but you might post close up photos of the wood over on woodworking forum and see what they think.

You could at least remove the wood blinds and replace with fabric roman shades or curtain panels to add some softness. I would consider removing one of the wood shelves in the built in cabinets and putting your t.v. in the built in to keep all your focal points in one area. I also like the idea of painting or papering the back of the book cases. You can have foam board or thin mdf cut to size and paint or paper those to avoid doing anything permanent to the wood. Since there is so much warmth in the walls and flooring, I like the idea of using cooler colors to decorate as in the picture with blues and greens Holly posted above. It's really a beautiful space and the right furniture and decor will show it at its fullest potential.

Not stupid. Picking paint colors is always hard, and some rooms are just particularly challenging. I've seen a lot of rooms on this board, and believe me that your room qualifies as particularly challenging. Before you tackle paint, you should improve your lighting, since it can make all the difference in choosing colors. The room IS dark (look at the difference between your photos and the realtor's professionally lit photos!), and if you aren't getting light from outside, you need to compensate with more, better interior light. I don't see any floor or table lamps in your furnishings; that's one place to start. Are the foyer pendant, ceiling fan, and dining fixture the only ceiling lights in the room? Any recessed cans? I would start with brighter LEDs in all the ceiling fixtures, and maybe tweak the color temperature (though I think your problem is more that you don't have enough lumens than about color temperature). Can you address the carpet on the stairs without tackling the carpet in the upstairs? I was just looking at DIY stair carpet removal and refresh with paint. It's a lot of work. Regardless of the circumstances, the process is difficult and disruptive and expensive.
