Leaving for Europe in 1 week! Tell me your favorite haunts...
Comments (31)Oh, how fun! If I need to sleep on an overnight flight I find Nyquil works. Also, as you may have heard, the most important thing is to spend the first day out in the sun and stay awake as long as you can. If you can power through day 1, and not go to bed until dark, you should be on track the entire balance of the trip. Make sure you wear something very comfy on the plane to promote sleep, and if you are not in class of service with amenities, bring your own eye shades, etc. You also may want to take Heathrow Express to Paddington and get a taxi from there. It's quicker and if you are arriving midweek, avoids a nice chunk of the horrible London traffic. It is very easy to do and a very nice way to travel, just ask. As far as London things that might not already be on your list, you may want to do a tea somewhere. I like the Savoy for that but there are many great choices. If you want to grab something quick, Pret A Manger is not bad for lunch etc. As far as a daytrip, I would choose to add Bath or skip Stonehenge. Stonehenge is not far off the motorway and to me its setting diminishes its power. By contrast, Bath is an entire, lovely city, and of course has the lovely Roman ruins. Far more interesting to me. To me the best part of Scotland is the gloaming! Having now been to Alaska too I guess it's really the same thing. But the light is so beautiful. epsecially in the country side. We had a late night tour of the castle, which made it seem more romantic and was certainly less crowded. You have to take the boat at night in Paris, the Bateau Mouche (?), but don't do the dinner cruise. Even though its touristy the boat is the best vantage point for the buildings and the bridges, too. My fave bistro is Balzar, just because I know how to tell the taxi that it is "pres de la Sorbonne". There is hardly a bad bistro in Paris I suppose. Get a picnic and take it to the Bois de Boulogne's little park called the Bagatelle, with tulips the size of a dinner plate. Definitely get hot chocolate at Cafe Flore, where they serve a pot of hot chocolate (unsweetened) and a pot of hot milk and you mix it yourself. Nestles Quik it isn't. Shopping for food in paris, especially Laduree, or Mariage Freres, is a delight. But I also love the restaurant supply store Dehillerin. A wonderful place to buy mementos of Paris. I guess one has to see Versailles, but it is kind of an eyesore inside. The gardens are the real treasure, and the small accessory buildings. I preferred out day trip to Chartres, lovely little town and cathedral....See MoreAmityville House for Sale Again (pics of inside)
Comments (25)I've seen this house, and not long after the book and movie came out. We spent some summer vacations on LI and it was only a 20 minute drive. It looks just like any other Dutch Colonial style home, there are dozens just like it in the area I live in. The movie scared me when I was a kid, but now I realize how far-fetched and ridiculous it was, and it was all proven to be a hoax anyway. Still, with all the homes on the market today, why would anyone want to live somewhere where something so horrible happened? True that many live in old homes where people died, or that up till WW1, after death & before burial bodies were kept and wakes held in old homes, but murder is something else. Plus, didn't DeFeo claim that he was hearing voices in the house, that demons were telling him what to do? No thanks, too creepy for me....See MoreScary amounts of landscape fabric and gravel in Castle Rock
Comments (22)I "liked" ZachS's comment "having a vast plain of rock is not a viable solution any more than is Kentucky Blue" so much and if there were a double-like button, I'd click that too. His points about zeroscaping are more eloquent and scientific than mine. And SO true. Rock has consequences. It's hot and takes a lot of maintenance. That maintenance often includes harmful chemicals to keep those weeds at bay. I read a recent article about the problems they are having with some of the water-wise gardening in California. Because there is so much rock, there is no water for the trees. Homeowners are not watering lawn anymore which is where the trees were getting their water and they neglected to plan for that. So they are losing big shade trees everywhere. Everything has an impact on something else. I know that water is expensive and I'm definitely not advocating that anyone install a home golf course or baseball field, but there are so many other solutions. Like Skybird said, Amester has a beautiful grass-free front yard that probably uses a fifth of the water that lawn would and likely has few weeds and no chemicals. I'd love to see more of that! Comments (46)If you read the two links in 4boys2's post you will get more of the background information. I'm the OP and have enjoyed your reaction to this unusual house. Many of you mentioned how pretty the yard is and you are so right. The previous owner had had it landscaped several years ago and I crept by it in my car in every season of the year. The yard was like a park. As the years passed it got pretty overgrown so when the current owner bought it he really thinned out the vegetation. It looks a little sparse now but will be beautiful in a couple of years. There is a large flower bed near the front gate. You can see it in some of the pictures. It was planted mostly in annuals this year and very common ones at that. The plant used most extensively is coleus which is grown mostly for it's gorgeous colored foliage. I don't know what they used for fertilizer but the plants were huge by fall. I don't know much about the owner but he made his first millions in commercial real estate, buying, selling, and leasing. He sold that business and has had an exotic car business for several years. This is at least the third house he's remodeled and decorated and each one is wilder (pun intended) than the next. I surmise he also loves publicity. All three of his houses have had articles about them in the local newspaper and magazine....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
