What size linear pendant over long dining room table?

My dining room table is 84" long and 48" wide. It has 2 leaves that I can add for big gatherings, reaching 108" long. But those occasions are rare, maybe once or twice per year at the most.

I googled how to calculate the right size lighting for a dining table but all the results I have found take into consideration only the width of the table, which would ask me for a chandelier/pendant between 24" and 36" in diameter.

However, I want a linear pendant and my table is longer than the standard. I also don't want to overpower the room.

My husband likes this one from RH the best - modern filament chandelier which I find TOO big at 60" long and 15" wide.

I was thinking a good alternative would be this one from Ballard Designs at 40" long and 14" wide/deep.

I like the style of RH slight better, but again, I think it is too big. On top of that, it is $400.00 more expensive...

Any inputs please?

On a side note, if I had my way I would get something VERY DIFFERENT. The lighting I had my heart on is this one from RH:

But my husband HATES it. He says I can get it if I really want it, but although I love it, I am afraid of regretting it in 3 or 4 years because the style seems like a fad.

It's better to have a light that is slightly too big than one that's too small, plus the structured and open design of the Restoration Hardware means it doesn't take up as much visual space as other designs might. I think the Restoration Hardware pendant is actually the better fit for your table--the Ballard one risks looking too small against the whole table, whether or not the leaf is in it.

If you did decide to go for the cool industrial black and brass chandelier, I'd recommend buying two, imagining your table divided evenly in half and then mounting each chandelier so it is centering its half of the table.

I'd say your current one is too wide. since you have lower ceilings, I'd go for something a bit smaller. General rule is 30" apart. If you like the 29" size, that's your call, but I'd do something at least a 1/3 smaller (than the current one) here is the one style you mentioned. However, what is the style of your dining room? right now, I don't see anything in there that would compliment this modern style of lighting. Your table is somewhat generic, the chairs I don't even know, the family style bench and whatever those two console things are hanging out in the vicinity! Lets get an idea of the look you're going for first, then decide on your pendants. I like his lights in a room done like this: (this would work well for your table) or, how about his linear light fixture? takes the measuring work out of your hands I really like this look w/the dark wall, white cabs, simple chairs, dark table. I like this one too if you prefer to have the larger pendants not a fan of the over-sized. But if you like it, here's how you do it! some other visuals

A linear chandelier describes the shape. Modern describes the style. For your table, you need a linear shaped chandelier, The style of the other fixtures in the room is modern. So, you really need a linear, modern chandelier. That is what I recommend. What would you want different from that? Thanks.

Ok, with an 8ft island, if you want something hanging from a single box with three lights on it I would look at something about 48'' long, especially because what you like is very dainty, so it needs to not fade into the background too much, the dark cabinets will help that. However, lighting is the last thing you should be trying to pick. And I would wait until the cabinets and hood are up before trying to make any calls. Also, what will be hanging over the kitchen table? Lighting is far easier to establish with a more finished product to look at.

It looks like an integrated bulb and IMO a bad choice always . So I guess if that is the case I would not go there. I think I need to see the kitchen it is going into basically you have yellow hued lighting so if you have a white kitchen it will now look yellowed . I think it is too short for a 9’ island and I would look for LED pendants where the light actually lights the island and I would do 3 pendants or get a much longer linear fixture that also lights the island not the ceiling.
