Worm bin is a maggot bin
Comments (6)The bedding used for vermicomposting creates a very nice environment to raise fly larva, maggots, because it contains the food they like, decaying vegetative material, and the high moisture levels needed to support them. For those maggots present a light dusting of a desiccant, such as blood meal, can help and keeping the bin covered with a good window screen should be enough to keep the adult flies away so they do not lay more eggs....See MoreAre micro-organisms in vermicompost/leachate same as Bokashi EM?
Comments (3)I've read a couple articles on using newspaper for homemade Bokashi. Their methods entail using bought EM or making EM using the liquid from washing rice and some milk/yogurt and fermenting. Still seems that the methods start with aerobic bacteria being cultured into the newspaper. A lot of the posts I've read here warn about getting good air flow into your worm bin to keep it from going anaerobic. I'm thinking that you can create anaerobic conditions pretty easily. My thoughts are that the pouring the leachate into a sealed container of layered sheets of newspaper and letting it sit a couple weeks will generate the anaerobic bacteria I need for a Bokashi Bucket. Not sure though if the newspaper sheets should be dried out first or if I can just use them straight from this container into a Bokashi Bucket. My worm factory doesn't generate enough leachate to be very useful. From what I've been reading it's better to not let your bin get too soppy wet so I've been working at keeping enough cardboard pieces in there to soak up moisture. It sounds like a fun experiment anyway. I'm off to find an appropriate container to give it a go. Just want to see if anyone has tried this before. If this works well it's at least a good use for the small amount of leachate that my bin does produce and I can get rid of the kitchen garbage that I can't put in my worm bin....See MoreFound A Great Site For Storage & Organizers!
Comments (45)Wow...how did I miss this thread till now??? I LOVE being organized, but one half of this family, not so much. My oldest DD was born with the gene, so it comes naturally for her. The youngest DD...not so much. It's like living with Felix and Oscar (for the **oldies** here who can remember the ODD COUPLE) hehehe. Frankly I love being organized cos it drives me crazy having to look for things. I'm just glad to know I'm not totally crazy for labeling my light switches. I use the P-touch labeler too. I never knew they made brass plates. When I labeled mine, I just used the small tape with small fonts. With one plate that has 5 different switches, it sure comes in handy. For my dear mother who loses EVERYTHING, I found the perfect plaque that reads "Organized people are just too lazy to look for things!"...See MoreHow organized is your garage?
Comments (16)I purged the garage 3 times last year. Yup, you read it correctly. 3 times. So yes my garage is tidy. Not pretty but floor is clear, no more holes in the now painted walls and I know where everything is. I doubt 2 cars can fit, it's a small 2 car garage with an 8' extension for the laundry area. Lost most of the stuff in the rafters first time around and a lot of actual junk like empty containers that needed to go to hazardous waste disposal. Second time got rid of a shelving unit to make room for my trike to hang on the wall. Floor was clear, a car could fit but more to do as things that couldn't be shelved were slotted between shelving units which reduced parking width by a couple feet. Third time I really got into it. Repaired and painted the walls. One wall has stuff hanging against it to save floor space. Facing wall looks like I bought things to fit the space with nice shelving lining wall and trike and mower hung under the window. I put shelves up near the rafters to accommodate the stuff that had been on the last of the rickety shelving. There's a real work bench with an easily washed surface opposite the washer and the last file cabinet was emptied of papers and is now pantry storage. I could have easily put everything back into the garage at that point but chose to get rid of those what if, old hobby and haven't been used for umpteen year things....See Morehavingfun
