Already dreaming of new hummer plants
Comments (10)I've already ordered Salvia 'Amistad' from Burpee to arrive in spring and also Stachytarpheta mutabilis (coral porterweed), Cuphea micropetala (giant cigar plant) and Anisacanthus quadrifidus var wrightii (flame acanthus) from Almost Eden. Of course I also picked up some Tithonia 'Torch' (Mexican sunflower) seeds from Home Depot along with some Zinnia 'Purple Prince' (not to mention the Ipomoea lobata seeds from last year I never planted). You'd think I have enough but I'm still interested in Scrophularia macrantha (red birds in a tree) and Odontonema strictum (Firespike). Laugh. I guess I want all the hummingbird plants. :)...See MoreNew butterfly/hummingbird garden update
Comments (10)Jane, Thanks for the kind words. My garden faces west and is is full sun after about 11:00 am. I have to water it about twice a week now because it has been so hot and we haven't received rain in weeks. This is the garden's first full month...so I'll have to wait and see how it does in the summer. Yes, our Mexican Petunias are in large pots to keep under control. Sherry, Thanks! I grew the shrimp plants in Williston too but they always got killed back by hard freezes and had to start over every year. I'm hoping that since I'm a whole zone warmer here with no freezes that they will do better for me. Tom123 recommended the 'Phyllis Fancy' salvia, and I agree...it is so easy to grow. The ones in the pics were dug up from my Williston yard and were just starting to show green when I transplanted them here a month ago..I was surprised that they have grown so full and are blooming already. The 'Amistad' salvia have doubled in size in just a month too. jaybirdyj, Thanks!!! I prefer to use pine needles for mulch but Joe uses the red everywhere else so I decided I needed to be consistent. It does makes them stand out as you said :) Wow! I am surprised that the cuphea grew so well for you in Illinois. Yes, the hummers do love them. I made sure to include a few host plants: milkweeds, passion vines, Dutchman's pipevine, parsley and dill. Thanks again everyone! Rhonda...See MoreWhat's going on In Your Garden? February Edition lol
Comments (46)Thank you Sultry, Yes those are the best onions for my garden 4 different varieties of short season, they last me a long time after the harvest. I have tons of very colorful mix of lettuces for my salads and sometimes I add the nasturtiums flowers for decoration, I love the peach color. The far left bed have the best carrots in the planet! I am not kidding you, lol. Japanese style red and pelleted orange varieties, I make tons of fresh carrot salads. I am growing small, smooth skin persian cucumbers, 2 different varieties. Friends and family wait anxiously for the tomatoes, they make the best gift baskets! Today in the garden the tomatoes, one of each kind in the pots, it is hot and I have to shade them a little...See MoreSome color on a gray day
Comments (74)Thank you. I almost bought another DD the other day that was grafted on Fortuniana, when I got the two fort grafted Abe Darbys. I had to really control myself lol. I kinda like that the DD's stay smaller so I can have something to put in front of the roses that get so large here. This morning I looked out the window and saw my Amistad salvia shrub shaking and saw a hummingbird going from flower to flower and Mr. Grouchy Carpenter Bee buzzing angrily around the hummer. What a piggy that bee is. He really is guarding the salvia lol. I tried to grab my camera but the hummer took off....See Morechickadee2_gw
