Advice/opinions re: VINYL flooring for new kitchen?
Comments (43)I love seeing all the beautiful vinyl in this thread! When I was starting to plan my new kitchen, I wasn't sure what kind of floor I wanted. We'd had cheap sheet vinyl when I was a kid, and it looked awful, always curling up at the ends. (I think my mom didn't want it glued down - not sure why.) But I was still willing to consider vinyl since I liked its easy-care properties. I also read good things about linoleum in Consumer Reports. But every contractor who came to bid on my job said I should get tile. Every single one (and I interviewed about six of them)! They just thought vinyl wasn't up to the standards of the rest of what I wanted to do in my kitchen - the stone countertops, the tile backsplash. (Though I wasn't quite up to SS appliances yet - I was still talking about keeping my old white refrigerator.) They convinced me. And I'm not sorry - I like the tile I got - but it *is* hard to stand on. (I don't think I really understood what that meant till I actually stood on it!) And I think some of the better vinyls would have looked really good too. So if you want vinyl, go for it! You all rock! :-)...See MoreOpinion on Cabinet Pulls
Comments (31)My first thought was the straight ones have sharper edges and might hurt if bumped into. I think both have clean lines, which I tend to like, so they are even in that category to me. I am guessing the curved are easier to use and project a little more. I definitely like the 2nd knob better than the first. I think if you do the pulls vertically, I'd want the curved ones. If you go more modern and do them horizontally, I'd do the straight ones. In either case, I'd use the 2nd knob for the drawers if you have any narrow drawers in the mix. You'd need wide drawers to pull off either pull on the drawers with your cab style. If I had only the 2 pulls to choose from, I'd go with the curved, but I am not entirely convinced they go with your cabs. I'd have to see them in place to know for sure. The cabs and hardware are all nice, it is just about whether they work as a combo....See MoreOpinion on hardware choice for new cabinets - last minute! yikes
Comments (8)Wow - getting cabinets put in as I type.... The husband of KD here to supervise and once again, frowned at our choice of hardware. :( Now we are sitting here second guessing ourselves, but honestly can't find anything else we like. He suggested ORB, but the ORB hardware I've seen isn't very attractive. (Although, it's just stock stuff at Home Depot). We have 2 choices, don't install any hardware today OR go with the 7" stainless steel bar pulls... If we do decide to wait, how hard is it to drill our own holes for the hardware? Installers will not drive 40 miles back here to simply install hardware if we decide to wait and order something different....See MoreShould I keep the masking tape pulls?
Comments (16)Ditto marcydc. I have seen handles like the ones marcydc linked to. I got a 20 feet long strip of extruded aluminum (channel) from which you cut the length you want. From a Richelieu hardware distributor. Keywords / key numbers for web search are " Richelieu 318612170 OR 31861210 " 318612170 Inox Stainless plating on aluminum extrusion http://www.richelieu.com/produit/detail.php?no=318612170&fr=pgr 31861210 anodized finish aluminum extrusion http://www.richelieu.com/produit/detail.php?no=31861210&fr=rec (This one costs about half the price of the Inox one) You have to cut it to the length you want. If you cut it into tiny lengths your cost per handle is next to nothing in dollar terms. I cut strips to be as long as possible, the same length as the drawer front. -- I also got Klippig (at Ikea). Klippig is better than Strecket, in my opinion. It's easier to pull because the grip edge is larger and angled forward. 45 degrees or 30 degrees. With ridges underneath. In 2008 I spent a lot of time on the phone with a senior Ikea person telling him I wanted a handle like this. Nine months later Klippig came onto the market. Perhaps my input was helpful to the process. Here is a link that might be useful: Klippig has an angled front...See More22k22
