M&M's and Reese's peanut butter cups. Those are the items I most liked to receive as a kid.

When I still gave out candy, which was when the children still came and parents were not afraid of their own neighbors in a long-established, highly desirable neighborhood, I gave out Reese's PBCs. I think parents are rightly concerned about homemade treats - might have something in them to which the child is allergic.

We give out king sized candy bars. I buy a variety at Target. Sometimes I add in cookie packages for those who don't like candy.

Sadly, I don't get any trick or treaters. I live in an acreage development. I guess the houses are too far apart. Chi, I bet the neighborhood kids love to come to your house.

They do but not as much as I love seeing them! This is the first house I've lived in where we get trick or treaters so I tend to go a little overboard. My husband rolls his eyes at me but he smiles when he hears how excited they get :)

Since I rarely get trick-or-treaters, I have quarters on hand just in case.

at my house the kids seem happy to get a pencil, an eraser,(for the top) and 3 or for tootsie roll minies. you just need a small bit of candy I think, and the kids all get happy faces when the see what the get.

greenshoekitty, reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd go trk/trtng at a house that was also an insurance agency. They gave out pencils with their advertising on them. We didn't care to get practical treats. lol

We never get them anymore and pretty sure we won't this year because not many people are living in their houses.

I get two large bags from Costco. I used to make goodie bags with pretzels and candy. Not, I just offer two pieces of candy.

Ok, no idea how accurate this state by state candy favorite is. If Lemonheads are a fave in Louisiana I wouldn't be tempted by leftovers.

I give out cans of Coca-Cola which the kids and parents seem to like. Since I never drink it myself, any leftover goes to a friend that does.

I went ahead and ordered some party favor type stuff this year...We'll paint a pumpkin teal and set it out soon so that parents can see it ahead of time...

I might get some candy too..idk.

Trick or treaters mark the best houses in the neighborhood with a pumpkin. The more votes a house receives, the larger the pumpkin appears on the app.

We have all kinds of popular candy brands in a big witches pot and I give each kid a handful. I also started doing glow sticks. Just bought 100 with connectors for $8 on amazon. A couple of weeks ago I bought a 40 pk case of Ghoul Aid (kool aid) drink pouches from BJ's. I'll burn some incense and put my lava lamp on an outside table for atmosphere. Yard is decorated already except for a couple of larger items.

I give full size candy bars. I buy 3 boxes at Costco and get 3 different kinds so the children can have a choice. LOVE seeing the looks on their faces when it is a big candy bar instead of a mini!

They had XXL Hersheys choc bars w/ almonds on sale for $1ea, they ran out. That was my 1st plan. No go. We rarely get trick or treaters...our driveway is 213' long....so I'll buy some Reeses Peanut Butter cups to give out & freeze them if any are left.

We live in an acre plus area so most kids go to neighborhoods that have homes closer together, but I always keep candy ready for the few that come by. Probably will buy the little Milky Ways.

I usually give out boxes of 100 percent juice, the kids all seem to get excited over it, especially if they are thirsty while out. Sometimes when my neighbours won't be home they give me their candy to give out so I have to tell the kids not to go to that particular house because they are getting the treat here. If it is a nice night I always sit on the front porch steps so the little ones don't have to climb my big porch steps. Growing up my Dad always bought full size boxes of raisins to give out.

I used to give out an assortment of Haribo candies- Gummy Bears, Twin Cherries, BlackBerries, Cola Bottles, etc. and some party favor type things. But we changed neighborhoods (adjacent neighborhood, same city) and our current neighborhood involves a billionaire who flies in amazing entertainment for the holiday (sword swallowers one year- live statues another,) plus this family gives out fantastic treats (big swirly lollipop, rock candy lollipops.) So people from all over the place come to this neighborhood to trick or treat and partake in the awesome atmosphere- everyone in the area goes all out on trying to make the evening awesome. My friends who live in that neighborhood say you have to fill a Costco cart to the brim with Halloween candy or order a ton of stuff from Oriental Trading Company in order to come close to meeting demand- so I can't afford to give out Haribo packets under those circumstances.

The downside of this amazing largess is that this family accidentally killed off Halloween in my old neighborhood (where we had a woman who provided home made doughnut holes for everyone- and another family would host all the adults on their front lawn with some appetizers and beer around a fire pit, watching the children file by.) The children all walk over to the other neighborhood instead to see what is happening.

I do not have any trick or treaters come.. I do give my little grandchildren some money and a coupon book from McDonald's. If I had someone show up trick or treating, I would probably give them a dollar. We do live out in the country, no little ones near.

We used to have a dentist in town who gave toothbrushes but the kids caught on and no one went there.. :-)

LOL phoggie! My children would have found that cool and tried to use it as a bargaining chip with me to get to keep their candy longer than just for the one night.

No such visitors during the 12 years that I've lived in this, which used to be my step-uncle's farm home ...

... that was bought by a sod supplier, who rents the house to me.

(Being a choc-aholic ... I sometimes get a treat or two for me ... at Halloween as well as at other times).

Now I just purchase what I think family members will finish off--Simply Caramels, Milky Way, $100,000, Mounds. We used to spend months making decorations, and having a lot of fun. But that neighborhood cooled off in visits, and we moved (well, not because of that!). Now certain children have pretty much dampened my enthusiasm. Full-sized bars got nixed because kids would return for a second visit, and hope a different family member answered the door to pass them out. Several others took "Choose two" to mean grab two handfuls and quickly drop them in their bag. After several years of that, they no longer get to choose. Now it is more a big annoyance for having to answer the door, than fun.

Years ago, my cousin went trick or treating and got a potato. The lady apologized and said she'd run out of candy and then quarters. All she had left was potatoes. We thought it was hysterical. In today's world, it would probably be thrown through the window.

I don't get any visitors so I plan to go with my granddaughter and her one year old to a harbor store where all the merchants in town have decorated and have bins to walk by and take a piece of candy etc.

this year a bought a big bag at BJ's, "child's play". it was on sale, coupon, so that's what i got.

i used to buy big bars thinking we would get more kids, you know, word would spread, "that house has big bars". but it didn't so i just by what's on sale and then DH takes leftover's to work and gives it out to the homeless people on the street, (in the city). so sad :(

I will admit that part of my thinking when I got favors rather than candy was that we wouldn't have it in the house after. Or before. Or during.

It's so hard to know how much to get..some years a lot of kids come and some years not many.

This year, one packet of hot chocolate. One emoji marshmallow (to put in the hot chocolate) some Rockets (or as Americans call them: Smarties). One mini Nestle brand chocolate and a sucker. I made 100 baggies up and hopefully they'll all be gone before we turn out the lights.

No one wants to climb my driveway. Probably 20 trick or treaters total over that many years.

We give out the fun sized candy bars, usually things like KitKats, Snickers, and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. We also give out glow bracelets.

We haven't had trick or treaters in years but in a new house - everyone says there's not many kids but we'll be prepared. We usually buy whatever DH likes.

I get well over 200 kids, so I buy whatever is inexpensive!

I really like the coco mix idea!

Our lights are out on Halloween, but I put together a bag for my sprites every year. I always include non candy items like temporary tattoos, glitter gel pens, spider rings, hand painted Halo tangerines and baby pumpkins.

They both love "hot" things, so I make a mix of spicy pretzels, hot nuts, hot and spicy cheez-it crackers in which I add an extra dusting of wasabi powder. Candy corn and Halloween M&Ms added to my mix make it hot and sweet! Those girls love it! (And so do the adults.)

As for the sweet stuff, anything goes. They will love the hot coco mixes.

Debby- those treat bags sound so lovely. The emoji marshmallows and cocoa would be particular hits with my boys.

I buy stickers whenever I can get them at a good price, and also glow bracelets or necklaces (also when very cheap). Those are backed up with ordinary candy -- starbursts are a favorite around here. The stickers are most popular and are gone first! then the glow items; candy generally is picked last.

But, not this year -- I have to work during trick or treat hours.

Stickers are a really cute idea - little kids love them! Maybe I will try that next year.

Same here. I do have one 4 yo nephew that lived a few miles from us until 3 months ago. Now I won't have any :(

I buy a big bag or two of mixed Child's play candy and give each child a handful. I remember getting one piece at each house and would have a sackful. The kids now get so much candy, they have to empty their sacks half way through.

We are giving out glow bracelets but thinking quarters and juice boxes are an excellent idea as well. We won't use juice boxes so won't get too many then a roll of quarters might be a good back up.
