X-Post on Kitchens - Need new not high-end cookware for induction
Comments (4)When I had to get new cookware for induction, I went by how comfortable it felt in my hand. This will be different for everyone (has to do with weight and handle style). I ended up with Farberware Classic, which is the same thing I had before but the new version works on induction. I only bought the individual pots that I needed, not a boxed set; I don't think their nonstick skillets are induction-compatible. All my skillets are cast iron anyway. I also have an enameled cast iron Dutch oven (Fontignac, from BB&B) and love it. I'd say go round to a few stores that carry cookware and take a magnet with you, and try things out until you find one that feels right in your hand. I was willing to buy something more expensive if I needed to, but Farberware really was more comfortable for me than brands with long handles (plus I knew the handles would stay cool)....See MoreX-post from cooking - Love my new kitchen - scallops!
Comments (9)Yup - Couscous are your friend - whenever I need a fast starch - I have something in 5-10 minutes. I add ground pepper (and I did add this to the BC version), Parmesan, Gruyere, etc. My DH thinks I made something very special.... I won't tell him our secret! Dodge- lots of Floridans have nautical themes for their kitchens. My parents had lots of ocean items in their condo. Andrea - I don't have many non-stick pans anymore- even before I switched to induction, I was slowly replacing my pans - but when I make omelets - sometimes I want the option - and used the new scan pan tonight based on that wonderful video - and mine looked just like the chef's! Maybe there is hope for me as a cook yet!...See MoreStick blender recommendations?
Comments (17)I also have the original Braun that came out in the early to mid 80's. It still works well though it is sometimes hard to clean under the blade surround. I like it because it's not too big. OTOH a year or so ago I saw KA ones clearing out at WalMart extremely cheap so I bought two. One for me and one for SIL. I didn't like it, it was like wielding a baseball bat and it had a speed dial on top which I didn't think was necessary. The only good point was you could remove the stem to wash separately. SIL likes hers and I gave mine to my sister. The little Braun is much more practical and easier to use. Sometimes simpler is better....See MoreBest Stick/Immersion Blender?
Comments (20)I have a monster Kitchen Aid one that I got because of reviews and because it seemed longer than all the others; I wanted it to be able to work in tall stock pots cause I initially bought if for making homemade cold-processed soap. It did an AMAZING job for that but for all cooking purposes too. Gets things done very quickly cause it's so powerful (has cord too) but it's pretty quiet too. A couple of weeks ago I made mashed potatoes with it cause my electric hand mixer broke. I couldn't believe I've been using a typical mixer all these years when I could have been using the stick blender! What's funny is that I have a potato ricer to get mashed potatoes extra smooth and creamy, and it's kind of a hassle but a nice effect/texture. With the stick blender, in way less time, I had that same creamy smooth texture. All the big brands will be good I'm sure but I recommend you get one that's tall enough in case the gift-recipient uses tall pots!...See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
