I Can't Keep Mums Alive! Help!
Comments (5)If you can find smaller plants in spring, plant them then. Most fall mums are mass produced, and rather tender with the amount of water and fertiliser applied, and then sold in full bloom. If you plant them in spring, they have good conditions to grow and set roots before they start expending their energy in flower production. If you can do it, knock or lift a mum you are thinking about purchasing out of the pot (the soil and root ball should stay intact and not fall apart) and look at the roots. They should be white or at least not dark and hairy and healthy looking. If they're not, that's an indicator they're probably not going to last the winter. Then please put them in a place where they'll get good winter drainage. Most mums die from rot. Mulch in winter, but don't be in too much of a hurry to remove them when the first warm days of spring come along. I killing freeze can finish off the crowns. Yes, it's true some varieties are a lot hardier than others, and there isn't any magic formula other than experience to differentiate which ones. Both may be sold as 'hardy' mums. I have some stands of mums I know have been in ground at least 30 years and still cranking. Others not so fortunate. Their price is so low on the market now, if you buy them even in fall just starting to throw bud, they're usually worth the price, even if they end up only blooming the season....See MoreCan't Completly Kill My Grass....
Comments (1)It looks like you have Sedge grass coming back Ortho backs a product just for sedge as for the Round up it way not be sticking to the leaves/blades on it they make a product to add to it so it adheres to waxy type plants . It might also be Bermuda grass check to see if it has rhizome type roots if so it will take several applications of round to kill it and I wouldn't mix it to strong or it might keep your new grass from doing well . Sedge is a paler or yellow green than Fescue or Kentucky Blue...See MoreCan't decide on grass seed!!
Comments (5)Thanks - I think I might just go with an all KBG blend then and see how it goes... there are some areas (significant) that are just dirt and we've struggled with weeds all summer in those places, so we really do need to put something down. And actually, the only places that look good right now are the shaded spots! It's also the low point of the lawn though so tends to get soggy there. We had Natural Lawn of America do our fertilizing and weed control this year - it was just too much for us to handle ourselves right now. The soil is clay. We wanted to top dress with compost before laying the seed, but it's a large lawn and I can't find any place to do it for us at a reasonable cost. I'll probably just spread a compost/topsoil mix myself over the bare areas before seeding....See MoreI can't keep up!!!
Comments (13)Whew - another day done. Nick just crashed 1/2 hour past his bedtime. You guys are so sweet! That's a bouganvilla behind the veggies, Carol. It is pretty but it likes to poke me in the backside and scratch my legs while I am gardening so we have a love-hate relationship. :) Did you see the weeds were as healthy as the garden? It's a long story - that patch of side yard is to the south of my house and last year I decided I'd dig up all the St. augustine grass and create a natural landscape with beach daisies, nice paths, etc. Well the tiller I rented was much too powerful for me and I couldn't control it....all i did was dig ditches. The heat was killing me. When I tried to lay the newspaper down with the sand to kill off the remaining grass, I couldn't keep it down and it was going everywhere. I finally picked it all up. Now I have a yard full of sandspurs. Anyway - the lawn company was keeping it mowed until about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't heard from them since. I think they went out of business. I have a new guy starting Friday, but until then I have to high-step over the weeds to get to the garden. It's kinda funny I guess because no one can really see it, so my neighbors don't hate me. There is time to fix it. That is why I was so interested in your pathways Silvia. I had big plans for this yard...I just couldn't make it happen. Yet. :) geocaching huh? That looked fun! Too late on the girl front though - he's sweet on a little cutie named Brooke in his class. Made her a valentine and everything! :) He should bring her one of his zinnias. Well - g'night you guys- more gardening and chatting tomorrow!...See Moreandy10917
