Can I mix hardware size for different sizes cabinets?

I have 2 sets of 30"w drawers, 2 sets of 24"w, 3 sets of 18" drawers and one 9" spice pull.

I read here that the rule of thumb for hardware size is 1/3 of the size of the cabinet, however, at store people keep telling me the "usual" way is same size for all hardware.

I was thinking on getting 8" pull hardware for the 30" and the 24" drawers (one pull per drawer as I don't like 2 pulls in the same drawer);

6" pull hardware for the 18" cabinets and a 3" for the spice pull cabinet.

Also, I would like to know if I have a drawer on top and door on the bottom, should I use knob or pull for the door? If pull, I am guessing it should be the same size of the pull I used for the drawer on the top, right (but in a vertical position)?

Jade, there aren't any hard rules about pulls and knobs (despite the fact that some people think there are). But there are guidelines, and many of them conflict. One example is the rule of thirds that you mentioned. Another is to ignore the rule of thirds and use the same size pull everywhere, where you use two pulls for drawers wider than a certain width.

Everyone does something slightly different with hardware. Personally, I don't like the functionality of knobs or bin pulls - although I love the look - so I picked a pull that comes in multiple lengths and doesn't have "ends" to catch on clothing.

I used 6" pulls on my 13"-wide drawers and all doors (mounted vertically, as you said). I used 12" pulls on my 33" sink cabinets, 24" dishwasher panel, and 36" drawers. I will have stacked upper cabinets and will use a very low-profile knob on the top cabinet (mostly for decorative items so my dislike of using knobs isn't a big deal there). I thought about following the rule of thirds for the DW and wider drawers/cabinets, but decided I'd rather have just 2 lengths instead.

Knobs and pulls are so personal, and depends in part what look you want to achieve, IMO. I also prefer 1 pull per drawer and think those pull sizes will work great (but no comment on the spice pullout cabinet as I don't know the width of it). I have 4 different sized pulls (not including my appliance pulls) ranging from 3" to 8" and I am very happy with the look.

Are you putting knobs or pulls on your uppers? I'd be inclined to do the same for my lower doors.

ETA: I did all pulls (doors and drawers) mounted horizontally in my kitchen.

We have two different colors and style of cabinetry. We used different hardware on each. The painted cabinetry has ORB bin pulls and knobs. The stained alder has wooden knobs that match the cabinetry as does the island. We also have a Hoosier kitchen cabinet that has brass latches. I like that look. You can add so much personality with a small thing like hardware.

I agree with Pagan. The Gritty mix I use had to be adjusted to my young plants and for my dry area. The Growstone which I have been using for a year is still the same size, Not a lot of breakdown. I had to add chore powder to my mix because the mix was drying out to fast. Not a lot added though. I have been listening to everybody here and they kind of do there own mix for their area and for what they can buy. Since my plants are small (6-8mth) I am having to learn what water they need. I have killed to many seeds I started I was so afraid of dry rot that I found that I was underwatering. Since mine drain and dry fast I just splash and go. The water runs through and a day or two later I splash them again. My TT little fat boy really wanted more water. The caudex had a slight give, but once I changed how I watered it is firm again. I am holding water a little more on my tree that stopped sucking up water during shipping. I had to hack the whole top and 1/2 the caudex off. The roots were fine. So we shall see how that works out. I will try seeds again now that I am getting to know the trees needs.

@arboston NO! Mixing metal is absolutely great, but there has to be some logic involved to avoid mish mash. . Use the brass knobs and pulls on ALL of the cabinetry. Please. I doubt your appliances are polished nickel, they are probably stainless. With a STAINLESS faucet, you would have a lovely mix of brass and stainless finishes, a beautiful warm/cool mix.....and logic as well, with no visual confusion, as your metal finishes will be limited to TWO.

Beth this is a huge help! Thanks again, I agree on the knobs for the short cabinets. I think I can get away with using the same size pulls on the draws and doors (middle row) and using a larger pull for the pantry door. My longest draw/door is 30in and my shortest is 23. What size pulls would you suggest? I see a lot of pictures use small pulls and simply use two on the longer cabinets but Im not a fan of that look. Also, I was saving adding glass to the kitchen cabinets for last but now you have me thinking to move it way up on my list! Arcy- I do not have children but even if I did, I would still use pulls on the drawers because my mom had knobs and I still managed to find my way to the counter top, esp for treats :). Also, the top cabinet is not made to push then pop.
