varicose veins

User

I saw a vascular surgeon today for my legs. I have pretty bad varicose veins especially in my left leg. I explained what happened to one vein a few months ago and how it's now thin and hard. He said what happened is thrombosis but because it's in a secondary vein it's nothing to worry about at all. I just needed a specialist to verify that, because that's what my GP told me too. My son died from blot clots in the lung that travelled to his heart and even though it was very quick and painless, I'm just not ready to go just yet. ;)

He asked if I wore compression stockings and I said I did now and then but one morning they were so ridiculously hard to get on, I threw them across my room and haven't put them on since. He said it's okay, he doesn't recommend them for anything other than putting some extra pressure on the veins. They won't get better with them on, and they won't get worse with them on. Phew! I hate them!!

So we discussed options: there is a private clinic that can put shots in your legs to kill off the veins. It's not covered by Alberta Health Care and he said judging by how bad mine are, I'm looking at 3-4 grand for ONE LEG! Uhm... NO.

He said I could have the leg stripped, which in my case would take about 2 hours and I would have about 50 small incisions! And it's covered by Alberta Health Care. My father had his legs done when he was 40/41 years oldish and my sister had hers done at 18 years! (she's had 3 bypass surgeries since she was 40!!). So, my question is: because it's elective surgery and my veins bother me pain wise a little, but visually a LOT, and I do mean A LOT, should I get them stripped? He said I'll walk home from the hospital as it's day surgery. I'll have my legs wrapped for a few weeks, then will wear compression stockings for 3 more. I'll be off work for 2 weeks. I have 96 hours (the maximum allowed at work) sick pay sitting in the pot at work, plus I get short term disability. Financially I can do it. I may not need the short term, just two weeks off work to heal then go back to work.

Have you had your veins stripped? How long was the healing process?
