I always fail with milkweed, need some advice
Comments (18)Krt1 - You are probably referring to common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca. It is a hardy plant, but not a great garden plant because it spreads by runners hither and yon. It is weedy, and IIRC it may be somewhat toxic to livestock. So I guess many gardeners and farmers consider it a pest. Monarch populations have been declining over the past decade or two because their habitats are declining. People should try to preserve a patch or two of Milkweed if they can. Even a few plants growing in the corner of a yard makes a difference, but the more the better. Some pics from my Monarch year 2012. These are large 5th instar caterpillars, inside a butterfly enclosure, eating their milkweed stalks. Here are the same caterpillars emerging from their their chrysalises - there are 25 Monarchs here, the most i've had eclose in one day. This is the milkweed field where I collect stalks of milkweed to supplement feeding the caterpillars, also have collected eggs here....See Morewhere do you buy milkweed plants
Comments (16)You must be right by the Panhandle of Florida. What is your zone? Do you see freezing temps? Have you considered trying Asclepias physocarpa Oscar for your Monarch host? It's not exactly native, but it supposedly gets huge and can support a great deal of cats. It is also compatible with your zone. Takes well from cuttings too. Deadhead to prevent escape. Asclepias exaltata, or Poke Milkweed, is a shade tolerant species that will grow in your area. A. amplexicaulis seems to be prevalent in your region, according to the maps. Asclepias variegata is another Alabama native. And finally, there's the Whorled Milkweed, A. verticellata. This dainty milkweed is most attractive with its miniature green white flowers and whorled, fine foliage. Here is a source for seeds: Live Monarch Seed Campaign 2014 3003-C8 Yamato Road #1015 Boca Raton, Fla. 33434 Good luck and order soon, as these seeds are apt to need some stratification....See MoreMilkweed from cuttings anyone?
Comments (17)A quick update on the common milkweed cuttings I tried to root in damp potting mix. Not one rooted. I tried some older stalks that had been kept in water while the cats fed on the leaves and I tried a fresh stalk cutting that I used with Clonex. All withered, rotted and died. It may be me or the age of the stalks or something else but just wanted to let everyone know the outcome of my little experiment. This report is only for Asclepias syriaca aka Common Milkweed cuttings. Asclepias curassavica aka Tropical Milkweed will root this way quite easily. I have recently taken root cuttings of Common Milkweed and planted in damp ProMix potting mix to see if I can get new plants using this method. Of course, I will also be winter sowing additional milkweed seed this winter for spring 2016 planting. Mary...See MoreHave you grown Purple Milkweed?
Comments (11)I've grown from seed and from a quart purchased plant. From seed.... i moved them to a nursery bed for a year or two. The entire first year they just hang out at 8 inches or so. The second year ... half stayed the same.. others grew over a foot. They bloomed the third year after getting moved out to the garden. From the quart plant... after it was happy for a season in a more damp location then common typically grows... it really took off sending up several shoots at the crown and blooming nicely. Now purple milkweed is suppose to be a clumper... unlike common milkweed. But.... I ended up needing to move the plant because it was too close to the edge of a bed. I started digging... and digging. It had sent a runner out almost 5 feet... running under a giant daylily plant... and an then an ornamental grass... and still hadn't sent a shoot up once. So it could have gone farther. POINT BEING... it's not a clumper!!!!! or minimally my plant doesn't know how to read it's instruction manual....See Morewhatis123 Mo.(6)
