Anyone grow honeyvine (milkweed) from seed?
Comments (8)Hi Angie, I am not sure if they need cold strat? Did a google search, but could not find any good info on this. I sowed mine on February 26th and they sprouted on April 26th, so they got some cold treatment whether they needed it or not. I would go ahead and try sowing them. It seems that this plant is very easy to propogate and grows quite vigorously, bordering on being a noxious weed in some places. I would be surprised if they didn't grow for you....See MoreWANTED: Plumeria or Milkweed cuttings - Naples area

Comments (8)I understand now, wantonamara -- thanks. I do recall my milkweeds forming pods, bursting open and blowing away pre-winter. The seeds pictured definitely 'died on the vine'. docmom_gw replied to my separate inquiry and says it could be goldenrod. The flower shape (feather-like) definitely looks right, and I can see how the leaves might resemble milkweed: Appears to be rather invasive for a garden that needs to support other plants), despite it being great for butterflies, bees, etc....See MoreMy newly sprouted milkweeds have been cut down...
Comments (8)As to whether it will bounce back this year, the correct answer is it depends on the species of milkweed. I've played with my Sullivant's a lot over the years, trying to figure out how I might squeeze some new growth out of it. Nothing works. Three other species also showed no interest in re-growing after animals nibbled them down. Butterflyweed can push new growth but I don't remember what the cutoff is <pun intended>. Once pods are forming, I'm pretty sure no new growth is happening. Unsure if you cut while flowers are blooming, what will happen. I've never pruned my butteflyweed on purpose. Milkweed tigers have done it for me. When the tigers caused new growth, monarchs have laid eggs on the new leaves....See Morewantonamara Z8 CenTex
