Bathroom update--need advice

After owning our home for about a year it's time to think about redoing our bathroom. We have oak trim/doors/cabinets throughout the house and that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is this ridiculous short vanity cabinet. It's only 30.5 inches tall! So cabinet needs to be replaced along with countertop/sink, the mirror AND new paint color.

Are there any any examples of a non-honey oak cabinet in a bathroom with oak trim and doors? I'm also not opposed to getting a taller honey oak vanity.

Were going to do a granite or quartz countertop with an under mount sink...i don't know what color though.

Any wall color suggestions? I like the current floor which is a tan ceramic tile that is in good shape.

Im terrible at visualizing what things will look like before they're done. And when I look at all these professionally staged bathrooms, they look great...but will never happen in my house. Love the look of white trim...but never going to happen.

I think you can absolutely use a white vanity in that space. Frankly, I’d post this in the Home Decorating Forum since your questions are more about design and color than technical issues or picking fixtures. Very helpful and very busy forum over there. Good luck.

I’d paint all the woodwork in the bathroom. It will lighten the look, which right now is very heavy.

I painted all the wood in my one bathroom, cabinets and all. I like the unified look even though there are several paint colors. The door is not painted on the outside, but is in the bathroom side. My other bathroom: I had all new wood put in to match. Vanity, wall cabinets, doors, and case work. I think it would be tricky to mix woods.

With regards to the tan floor, be sure you know what color tan you have. Just like grays and whites, tans can be a color, such as yellow or pink. If you cant tell get a friend to help determine. Some people have a very good ability to see color and some don’t.

You are going to want more than 32" for the toilet. 36" is standard (and perhaps even code in some areas???? Not here in Maine but I heard people saying that on other forums...) We have 34" and it feels fine but I dont think I'd want to go much tighter. You could solve that simply by flipping the closet and shower. So, have your shower -rotated 90 degrees and witha glass end wall- at the end of the tub (which is a nice setup you can see in many bathrooms, the tub deck can actually protrude under the shower glass wall and be a ledge or seat in the shower). Then the passageway moves to the left, and you can steal a bit of space from the other closet for the toilet. Either that of have a shorter vanity. 48" isn't a size I'd fight for. It's too short for a double vanity, really (unless you're using one of the new two-faucet 'trough" styles) so why not go down to 42" and have a better toilet area? For resale, though, you should consider a double vanity. Some people I guess expert truly huge ones, like at least 5+' long. But you CAN get smaller ones, Ikea has some great ones for tight spaces. But if you're not selling anytime soon, do what YOU like!! (But I still think you'll want more toilet space...)

Dancingqueen, I am in a similar position. The fan in one of my baths (they back up on one another, and there is one roof opening that the both tie into) is not all that effective, in part because of the convoluted layout of the ducting. I don't really know who to call to have a look at it to figure out what can/should be done. The issues you are wondering about have to do with the dimensions of the body of the fan (low vs. higher profile), the size of the ducting, and the location of the electrical connection on the box. Can you get up there and get a photograph? Do you know the make and model of the existing fan? With that you can research the dimensions.

You don't have to stay with oak -- you can use a painted finish -- black, white, grey or a favorite color, but you will need to paint the walls and then work to make it all come together. If you wanted another wood tone stain finish, it is possible, but you have to work with the undertones and grains of the woods and make them work together. Your tile looks like it may have some gray in it. Does it? It looks like it should go with a lot of things - though you might need to replace the tile because the new vanity's footprint may not match exactly if the tile doesn't go under the cabinet, or you might chose a style that has furniture feet and needs the tile to go underneath, or the tile could be damaged even if it does go under the cabinet. You could also decide that if you are going to do the cabinet and paint and fixtures, the floor should have a new look too (loooks like you have less than 50 sq ft and it would be pretty straight lines -- easy enough for a first project if you want to DIY). Have you looked at vanities to see what you like? You can get them with the countertop and sink in place -- just add a faucet (a few come with the faucets but you typically pick your own). If you spot something you like, that can be your launching point and inspire all your other choices. Overstock and Joss and Main are two places you might want to look just to start getting ideas. Wall color would follow vanity and floor choices in my book -- unless you had a color you loved and knew you wanted everything else to go with, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

If you want to keep the oak trim you could update the vanity with something modern like a floating vanity though this sink isn't under mount:

Here's an example where they tied in the accent colours to the oak cabinet:

Gray and white seem to be the preferred colours with oak, they look nice together:

It's hard to find photos with honey oak, most seem to be a light oak.

Here's an example with a coloured vanity with oak trim but the colours shown may be too dark for your small space:

I thought a white vanity with a marble or quartz top which includes some honey oak colours would look nice but I cannot find a good example. I will continue to see if I can find one.
