Over anxious daughter

My daughter is a wonderful mum to her three young children, although an anxious and sometimes stressy one. I live interstate and see them 2-3 times a year, and have a great relationship with my gc and son in law and daughter. I pitch in and help as much as possible when visiting and don't interfere with parenting. My only problem is that I'm often being disciplined by daughter in dealing with the children, unreasonably....I bite my tongue for a while and then we have a spat! I tell her she needs to chill a little, as does her hubby. It's then I feel like not putting myself in that situation....which is sad because I have so little time with them. Does anyone else experience this and how would you deal with it?! Really appreciated!

What exactly do you mean by "I'm often being disciplined by daughter in dealing with the children"?

I don't know, she doesn't sound like a loving caring person to me. She sounds like a punitive person who is scapegoating her mother. Just the fact that you use the word discipline to describe her behavior Sims indicative of her stance and of your position. I my own self would be tempted to stay at home and email or Skype to the children and send cards, letters, and presents to the children. I wish you the best.

I must agree with berrytea4me about hybridizers being very secret about what they do. I was involved with orchids before coming to other genera hybrizing. With orchid, there are almost no secret from anyone, everything or almost is known, published and even publicized. Every hybrid ever created is cataloged and you can find out what the parents are for any hybrid. If you want to know what the dominant and recessive caracteristics are for almost any good known parent, this information is readily available and updated as it is used, and this proves to be very helpful to everybody. The majority of hybridizers will share their knowledge, and in doing so, they don't loose anything while everybody is gaining something. This is a great help while trying to create new hybrids and can keep hybridizers from repeating the mistakes that were made by someone else. It also helps to make big steps forward in hybridizing orchids and in creating new genera of orchids. This is not the case with daylilies, irises, hippeastrums, peonies, echinaceas, etc. I find that most good information is either kept very secret and just plainly not available at all. For instance, there is almost no way to know what the parents are for most hippeastrum, even for most primary hybrids. It is a secret, and don't ask for more. That's too bad since I believe that such an attitude slows down anyone from stepping forward faster if not keeping them from moving at all. When you share what you know, you don't loose your knowledge in doing so, and you always have to know more than what you share to be able to share anything, so you are never empty of anything, you are always left with more than what you have given. "But back to money, if money is just money, then the SMs can give it up." Yes, so can the ex wife/husband, kids and all other relatives. As a child, if my dad passes before my stepmom, she will have to be taken care of until she dies. That may very well use up whatever my dad leaves because nobody knows how long she will continue to live. Her children are upset that she lasted long enough for her medical care to use up whatever she came into the marriage with. Her care costs more than her disability income she gets so... no inheritance for her kids. They aren't willing to accept that, they had to take it to court to hear a Judge tell them that there isn't anything left. Personally, the Judge should have told them that they can take over their mom's care and have her income. Oh wait, they were given that option and refused. They actually wanted to see if they were entitled to half of everything my dad has since it's 'community property'. Well, they aren't entitled to jack because my dad is alive and so is their mom. Impatient little buggers. My dad has worked hard for everything he has and if it ends up going to provide care for his wife because that's what is important to him, then he has my blessing. He's taught me what it means to do the right thing and he's taught me to be strong and make my own way in the world. All of his children have fairly successful lives and none of us 'expect' a thing. It's HIS money to do with as HE pleases and if he leaves it to his dog, that's also his business.

A canopy would work as long as it’s a twin. I love that look and kind of forgot to explore that option!!! And I agree, tall bureaus aren’t ideal but unfortunately it’s my only choice in this room. There’s only wall space for one horizontal dresser and she will really need the extra storage of the two lingerie chests since her closet is tiny. All of our furniture throughout our home is anchored to the wall (she’s our 3rd kid), so that will be a given. This won’t be her forever room, so trying to make do for the next five or so years until we either move or build an addition. I absolutely adore those drawer pulls 😍 thank you SO much for the recommendation!

Will you need to get a bank loan? Some of the deferred maintenance issues that you mentioned probably would get caught in an appraisal, even to the point of denying the loan.

Yeah, I've been mulling this one over in my mind and I can't think of anything you could do or say that might change things without causing your daughter to flip out. She sounds like a real control freak to me.

As Sylvia says, in your shoes I would just not visit, but otherwise keep all the lines of communication open. If pressed by her as to why you don't visit, you could just say you don't like to be a bother. Let them come to you.

You are the grandmother not the mother. It is different dealing with grandchildren than it is your own children. When dealing with grandchildren you must follow the children's parents rules. Think back to when your daughter was small. Would you have appreciated someone telling you what you should do or correcting your child and not following your rules? Of course you wouldn't have. If you have a concern talk to your daughter when the children are not present. Don't put it as an ultimatum but as something to think about.

Have you ever given your daughter praise when you think she is doing something right? I praise my son and DIL for doing what I consider a good job and I praise others when I see well behaved children. Being a parent is hard and you are not often given credit for the job you are doing. A beaming smile is my reward for telling it how it is.

Dowlinggram, for some reason Katherine's reply to my question has disappeared. In it she explained what happens, and your reply has no relevance in this situation. Katherine makes no comment about her daughter's child rearing and only finds out what the rules are after she's "transgressed"- and I must say, they're rules no normal person would have thought of. Then she gets read the riot act.
