We had the same problem. We were enlarging our master bath by 23" and couldn't see taking up some of our new, extra space with a standard/deep vanity. Having my elderly parents move in with us meant we needed all the storage we could get so a pedestal sink was not an option. Have you thought about a kitchen island, kitchen utility cart or microwave cart? Even a dining room buffet or low boy, console, adding your own bun feet to raise it up? Many kitchen utility carts/utility islands are made beautifully in furniture-style, they range from 21 wide and up (I was looking at wonderful 55" islands for our other bathroom but for the same reason needed smaller for space/storage reasons and went with a standard vanity) and if you add your own legs and hardware, they won't look like a kitchen utility cart. We will be adding our own tiled countertop to our microwave cart-turned-vanity which will make the total depth of the vanity 22". We considered a custom build but it would have taken up most of our miniscule DIY master bath budget. Just an out-of-the-box idea. These are both great looking options! This will not help you narrow things down at all (!) but I was searching for a small rectangle myself for a small single vanity, and bought one that is a touch smaller - the Kohler Kathryn - which is 17" x 13" (basin). (The Ladena is 18" x 12" and the Archer is 17 5/8" x 13".) It's not installed yet, but looks great. Actually it doesn't looks small or mean in "person"! You will see that this is a dead rectangle though, and quite contemporary looking. The Ladena and the Archer are a bit more angular... A few other options that I remember looking at were the - Kallista Original For Him Undercounter basin - 17 3/4" x 14 3/8" basin (I love the shape of this, but it's quite pricey!) Toto Legato - 17" x 15" basin Toto Waza - 17" x 15" basin Toto Aimes - 17" x 15" basin It's a very personal choice, but between the Archer and the Ladena, I prefer the shape of the Ladena. I have the Kohler Caxton sink K2210. The interior dimensions are 12x15. I believe it is 7 inches deep. I find this sink to be plenty big enough for bathroom use. The oval shape also gives you a little more countertop area than a rectangle shape. You should be able to get it in white for under$100. Home Depot has them on their website at $67 dollars. Here's how they look installed in my 60x21 inch vanity Plenty of room behind the sink, especially if you don't have an estcheon plate like I do because of a miscommunication by the plumber to the fabricator regarding faucet hole.

Give the manufacturers sink dimensions to your cabinet guy. He should be able to tell you how much total space is available in the cabinet the sink will go in.
