Board and Batten or Shingles & Metal Roof?
Comments (2)We moved into our new build in early Dec. We mixed Nichiha shakes on the central part of our home with Hardie board and batten on the outer wings. There are 2 gables that have cobble stone and brick at the foundation. I was afraid of mixing all those together but I'm very pleased with the look and the mix of colors. Our plans called for a copper roof over the front door (or metal) mixed with standard shingles on the rest of the home. When it came down to it - we went with an all shingle roof and no metal in an effort to keep our costs down. I'm not at the computer where I have photos stored - so I'll try to post an exterior shot later....See MoreNeed help with planning exterior siding
Comments (8)It's difficult to find anything about this house that is characteristic of the Craftsman Style other than the oddly proportioned front porch columns which are at odds with the Colonial entry door. The dominate architectural feature is the repeating end gables with pent roofs forming pediments and boxed cornices which is the most common style of design builders. It's kind of a combination of a Colonial Revival and a 2 story Ranch. What you are discovering, I think, is that it is not possible to correct the lack of a unifying architectural theme with exterior materials. I suspect this house design was driven by a floor plan and the exterior design was developed from that which IMO is the most common design mistake of design builders. Find a photo of a house you really like and post it so we can better help you. It would also help to know something about the climate and the surroundings....See MoreAm I on the right track?

Comments (1)WOW I think just copying the colors used in the drawing would be stunning - is that a depiction of your house + stonework that would be used? In the drawing, you see how the weathered gray of the windows and trim and roof shingles + the gold brown of the doors tie in to the color of the stone. Keep it simple. You dont want to upstage the stonework with adding in a bunch of extraneous colors. Even white if too bright or stark would be too much contrast I think and give the house a less cohesive and a more busy look....See Moremillworkman
